India is growing in every possible way — economy, development of rural areas, and most importantly, gender equality like never before. Once upon a time, there was this India that needed women to live in the confined environments of their family only. And now, we see India coming out with various welfare programs for the development of women. Government officials go to the most remote villages and encourage women with new ways of converting their niche into something that will help them create a self-sufficient source of income.

This is one such story, a story of 12 women from Thanikandi, a tribal village in the Coimbatore district. These women decided to open a small eatery together. Little did they imagine that this small step will turn them into owners of a thriving business that will improve their standards of living. And more importantly, it has allowed them to understand their potential to do something on their own and explore the same.

We all must have heard about the famous Adiyogi, a spiritual center in Coimbatore district, haven’t we? At Adiyogi, this little eatery offers tea, savories, coffee, and other snacks to the tourists. All their items are priced economically and their eatery is very famous among the tourists there. They are situated at a place where the Adiyogi visitors disembark from their tiring long journeys and provide an eight-seater buggy, an offshoot of their enterprise.

How It All Started?

It all began the moment Swami Chidakasha paid a visit to Thanikandi. This visit was made because of the Isha Foundation’s tribal welfare program. During this visit, Swami put forth the idea of a women-run tea shop at Adiyogi. The prime objective was to encourage women to set up and sustain an activity that generates income for the women, which would eventually better their living standards. This idea is so simple yet, incredible, isn’t it? But to implement it, in reality, was not as simple. It was more than what one would call a challenge.

Why Was It So Challenging?

As mentioned earlier, Thanikandi is a tribal village that lies in a dense forest and has 200 or lesser inhabitants. Though rural Tamil Nadu usually follows agriculture, this tribal village didn’t! The residents of this village got their income coming from either from infrequent farm labor or from doing daily wage work. This village doesn’t have a graduate till date, signaling that most of the people here are illiterates.

The tribal community of this village relies majorly on government schemes and other welfare activities that are carried out by non-governmental groups. When Swami proposed the idea of tea stall run by only women, there were no takers for it. However, Swami didn’t give up. He kept visiting the village with his team and focused on counseling the ladies of this village who were already working in the community kitchen of the Isha center. It’s because of his continuous insistence that few of the women decided to nod to the idea.

The Start Of Their Enterprise

Finally, 12 women came together and agreed to make Swami’s floating idea a reality. Each of them invested Rs 200 and started their small tea stall on April 8, 2018. Whatever they required for the tea stall — the stove, utensils, and other kitchen items — they borrowed it from their homes, neighbors or the Isha canteen. It was Swami Chidakasha who trained these twelve women right from scratch. He taught them how to make tea, greet customers, price their products, handle accounts, and most importantly he taught them how to work as a team.

The Turnaround

The enterprise defied everybody’s wildest expectations and generated revenue of Rs 90,000 in the very first month. The women got their share of profits as well. Four months into this, a profit of Rs 1,65,000 was made and each of the women got to take Rs 15,000 home. This was more money than they had ever imagined.

The success of this enterprise provided inspiration to other village members. The story of this women-run tea stall was covered by the local news channels and the 12 women attained celebrity status amid the nearby villages as well.

Flying Higher Every Day

The enterprise generated revenue of Rs 24 lakh by its first anniversary with a profit of Rs 9.5 lakh. It sure did start as a small tea stall but it has now converted into an eatery that stocks items on their menu. The 12 women managed to return everything they had borrowed to run the business and bought their items with the profits they earned. In fact, within six months they even replaced their three-seater buggy with an eight-seater one to ferry the tourists from bus drop-offs to the Isha Foundation. The women credit their achievements to Swani Chidakasha and are only aiming to grow and scale greater heights with their business.

It’s amazing how a small floating idea of Swami Chidkasha turned the lives of ordinary women, right? This story is an example that it only takes one small idea and some practical planning to start on a journey to make life better.

We all have copious things to complain about in our lives, don’t we? We just want somebody to ask us, “What’s wrong?” and we start off with the list of problems. How does cribbing or telling our problems to others solve it? We cannot find the solutions to the roadblocks in our lives by merely talking about it. The power to transform our lives for the better lies in our hands. If we know and understand the meaning of this, there will never be a roadblock in our lives that we cannot break.

And this is exactly what Ashweetha Shetty strongly believes since she read the autobiography of Helen Keller. Ashweetha was conditioned to believe that her life could be simply put in three words — poor village girl. Her understanding that only she had the power to transform her life conditions into something better made all the difference. Her hard work and perseverance have turned her into a renowned Ted speaker, a rural social worker, and also the founder of a non-profit organization called Bodhi Tree Foundation. Indeed a 360-degree transformation.

Ashweetha was born in Mukkudal, a small village that falls in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. She was the third child to her parents, who rolled beedis for a living. Life was not at all easy for Ashweetha. She recalls how she was brought up to believe that men yelling and raising hands on the women was a common thing. Like the majority of the inhabitants of her village, Ashweetha’s family was under dire poverty.

She says that she constantly lived with the fear of being married off after her basic schooling, just like her elder sister. Recalling that phase, she says that wherever she went during her high school days, the village people would only talk about prospective grooms for her.

The only positive thing that happened during this phase is that she realized that nobody expected anything from her. This motivated her to do something in life and show people what she’s capable of.

In addition to helping her family roll beedis, Ashweetha cultivated the habit of reading books. For her, books were an escape from reality. She began with novels and graduated to reading magazines. Books gave her the idea that there was a better world outside her village. The more she read, the more she felt that she was wasting her life in the village. She mostly read women’s stories. She says that Barkha Dutt inspired her the most. She would watch her shows and learn English.

Young India Fellowship (YIF) is a one-year multi-disciplinary post-graduate program. It provides arts education with experimental learning as its focal point. When she applied for this program, she was sure that she wouldn’t pass as she didn’t know how to speak in English. But, when she cleared the initial stages, she was pleasantly surprised and had to inform her father about it. He wasn’t happy because she had to shift to Delhi for the residential program. However, she managed to convince him.

She recalls that the best part about the selection process was her YIF interview during which she had to speak in English. She didn’t know how well that would fare as she never got an opportunity to talk in English before. The fact that she managed to talk, even if it was in a broken manner, made her really happy!

Her Mother Was Her Support

Asweetha understands that her mother never wanted to give birth to a girl child, because she didn’t have anything to give her daughter. Her mom made this very clear to Ashweetha. But when she applied to YIF, it was her mother who supported her throughout and backed her to use this opportunity to change the fate of her poor-conditioned life.

And during the YIF course in Delhi, Ashweetha soon realized that her village background proved to be a huge barrier. She initially succumbed to the language barrier. Over time, she made sure she put in persistent efforts and went on to successfully graduate in this course.

Ashweetha founded Bodhi Tree Foundation, a non-profit organization in May 2014. She wanted to use this organization as a means to bridge the rural-urban gap. She made this possible by empowering the rural youth through soft-skill training, allowing them to take control of their lives, and backing the development of the poor communities through better education and opportunities.

Currently, this organization is reaching out at 2,400 graduated from the rural part of India. It teaches these graduates to speak in English, improve their life-management skills, and also provides career counseling.

Ashweetha knows how much of a difference it makes to have a qualified person teach you English and guide you through the most treacherous times of your life. This is true especially when you need to set up a career path for yourself. And she wants to make sure that her organization provides all kinds of support to the rural souls who want to dream big. We salute her initiative!

Who doesn’t look forward to celebrating birthdays? Everybody does, well at least most of us do, right? We either love being pampered and getting all the special attention that day or we simply look forward to spending our birthday with the people we love, our closed ones! It was the same case with Dr. Shinu Syamalan, who celebrates her birthday on March 2nd with her close family members.

But she decided to do something different on her birthday. She expressed to her husband, Dr. KK Rahul, the desire to help a person in need on her birthday.

Her husband too worked in the medical field — he was a Medical Officer. When he traveled to work every day, he noticed how a group of people in the Kadayakara colony lived in tents made of tarpaulin and plastic. When Syamalan expressed her wish to help the needy, the plight of the families of Kadayakara colony hit his head and he told about them to his wife. It was at this moment that Syamalan decided to do something for them and from there began her journey as a social worker.

When Syamalan Vowed To Change…

On her birthday, when she visited the colony that her husband talked about, Syamalan was shocked to see the families living in extremely miserable and heart-wrenching conditions. Most of this colony’s residents worked as daily wage laborers. Syamalan found out that the lands on which these families lived on belonged to their grandfathers. They neither had enough money to transfer the lands to their name legally nor to build a basic structure of shelter for themselves. These families didn’t even have ration cards. What shocked Syamalan was that there was not even a single toilet in the entire colony. This, Syamalan vowed to change!

How She Reached Out To Social Media

She obviously didn’t have enough money or resources to build toilets for an entire colony of people. But this fact didn’t dampen her spirits. She thought the millennial way and decided to reach out to her friends and followers on her social media accounts to ask for help.

Syamalan was multi-talented; she was a poet, a writer, and a passionate dancer. Because of these qualities, she had gathered quite a good number of followers on her social media profiles. Nearly forty-three thousand individuals read her posts on health care and literature. She wrote about Kadayakara on her social media profiles, which influenced most of her friends to pitch in to help the residents of this colony. Owing to the number of followers she had, people from all over the world contributed. The contributions ranged from Rs 100- Rs 10000. In a matter of a couple of days, she managed to collect Rs 40,000, which was more than enough to build at least three toilets.

She didn’t want to hire a contractor to do this work. Instead, she hired few masons from the Kadayakara colony itself, so that they earned some money too. She brought all the required raw materials and built the three toilets for the colony. It was the best birthday present she ever gifted herself!

Her Journey As A Social Worker Continued…

In August 2018, her husband was transferred to Thrissur but the change of location didn’t stop her from doing what she’d committed to — help the needy.

Hers was a family of three — Dr. KK Rahul, Dr. Syamalan, and their adorable three-year-old daughter. Just when they shifted, floods ravaged Kerala and left the beautiful God’s own country in a devastating state. They didn’t even settle down completely in their new city. The doctor couple started visiting refugee camps to provide free check-ups and medications for the affected.

Syamalan catered to more than a hundred patients each day during this time and what caught our attention is that wherever she went, she took her daughter along. She wanted her daughter to get sensitized with the kind of problems people face in life. The couple did everything in their capacity to help the flood victims for nearly two whole months.

The Birth Of ‘Nizhal’

To continue the social work that had become an important aspect of her life, Syamalan formed an NGO called ‘Nizhal’. To fund the NGO she took to social media again. She says that she has 48,000 followers on Facebook and even if each of her followers contribute merely Rs 1, it’s enough funds to change the life of a person in need. Such a noble thought, isn’t it?

After the floods died down and aftercare was given, Syamalan visited many gram-panchayats and educated them about the vitality of water chlorination. She provides free check-ups for those who cannot afford a consultation fee of even Rs 100. And if the patient insists that they have to be charged for the consultation, she charges them a mere Rs 10.

Syamalan is a true inspiration for all those who believe that social media can make a difference. India and China have been tagged among countries that are major culprits in environmental pollution. Sustaining a huge population obviously means higher production and focusing on other civic and political issues rather than environment pollution, right? WRONG! If we take the initiative, even India, a developing country with millions of people still under the below poverty line can become cleaner and greener. And with time, people are realizing the importance of sustainable development and the change is on its way, even if it’s a tad slow. A recent report from NASA proves this point by suggesting that human activity in India and China dominates the growth of green on earth (1).

“China and India account for one-third of the greening, but contain only 9 percent of the planet’s land area covered in vegetation — a surprising finding, considering the general notion of land degradation in populous countries from over-exploitation,” said Chi Chen the lead author of the study in an article published on NASA’s official website. Chi Chen is from the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University, in Massachusetts (2).

This ground-breaking report gives us a ray of hope when all we know is that we’re very late in stopping climate change. According to the researchers, the global green leaf area has increased by 5 percent since the early 2000s. This increase in the green area is equivalent to the region covered by the Amazon rainforests. The collection of this data was made possible with the help of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), an instrument by NASA that orbits our planet on two satellites. MODIS has photographed about four pictures of every place on earth, every single day for the last 20 years.

Rama Nemani, one of the co-author’s of the research report said, “This long-term data lets us dig deeper. When the greening of the Earth was first observed, we thought it was due to a warmer, wetter climate and fertilization from the added carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, leading to more leaf growth in northern forests, for instance. Now, with the MODIS data that lets us understand the phenomenon at really small scales, we see that humans are also contributing.” Nemani is NASA’s research scientist who works at the Ames Research Center, Silicon Valley, California.

This growth in green is owed to the various agricultural practices maintained in India and China since the early 2000s. In both countries, more than 770,000 square miles of land is used for growing crops. China has been contributing extensively to expand the forests to troubleshoot the issues of air pollution, soil erosion, and climate change. While this makes the 32 percent portion of the increased greening in China, almost 82 percent of the growth in green is attributed to the cultivation of food crops.

While this helps to produce food for the countries’ population, it also helps make the planet greener. While this is really great news, it comes with a disadvantage. Many farmers in India tend to burn the dead crops after the particular season’s harvest. While the fire cleans up the land for the next batch of crops, the ash adds nutrition to the soil. But practices like these come with a high risk of wildfires, and more and more forest areas are burned down for farming.

So, to conclude, agricultural green is indeed good but they aren’t long-lasting. What the earth needs is more trees and forest area because that restores an entire eco-system and supports the wildlife as well.

Talking about the impact that human beings can have on the overall green of the earth Nemani added, “But, now that we know direct human influence is a key driver of the greening Earth, we need to factor this into our climate models. This will help scientists make better predictions about the behavior of different earth systems, which will help countries make better decisions about how and when to take action.”

We have all heard the words, “The past doesn’t define us. Our dreams do.” These words have an incredibly deep meaning to it. It helps us understand that no matter how bad our past may have been, if we dream and set our hearts to it, we can redefine our life. Yes, we are born into a certain family with a certain living condition. But, if we dream big and are working hard to achieve them, we can surely change not just our life, but also our family’s life into something better.

And this is exactly what Anu Oraon believed in. She wants to show the world her worth by proving it one step at a time. She says, “A doctor’s child will be a doctor, and a beggar’s child will be a beggar is a myth, and I will prove it!” No one would believe that these words have come from Anu Oraon, a 17-year-old teenage girl who has risen above all kinds of criticism and scorns (1). You must be wondering what is that she has been fighting so much, right? Yes, her parents are beggars suffering from leprosy! But, her living condition and the plight of her parents didn’t stop Anu from dreaming big. This Class 11 student from Ranchi is gifted with quick reflexes and an incredible will-power. She’s made full use of these and has emerged as a promising basketball player in Ranchi.

An Anecdote Of Her

Anu grew up amid a lot of social and financial limitations. But her dreams remained unperturbed. Her parents were infected with leprosy even before her birth. Her father, Tunwa Oraon was affected with leprosy in his hands and feet. Whereas her mother, Babi, had her left leg fall prey to the deadly disease. Even after begging in this heart-wrenching health condition, they earned hardly anything.

Their health limited them to begging as a means of living, making it difficult for the couple to meet the basic needs of Anu and her other four siblings. This was when a welfare organization called Damian Welfare Society came forward and took the four-year old Anu under its wing. The Society admitted Anu to Dhanbad’s Nirmala School to provide a better life for her. Anu passed her 10th board examination with a first-class there. Her empyrean performance in sports enabled her to bag a full scholarship to continue her secondary education at Guru Govind Public School. She says that her pursuing sports and education makes her parents hope for a better life in the near future. She admits that she misses seeing her parents every day and being with the rest of the family. But for her, the hard work and desire to provide a better life for her family outweighs her worries. Anu’s younger sister was provided opportunities for education by the Damian Welfare Society as well.

When She Had Her Calling In Sports

Since she was a little girl, Anu had always harbored the dream of being a part of the Indian Army. However, when she was in 7th grade, she found her calling in sports. Initially, she didn’t have any idea about a sport called basketball. She joined basketball practice only because she liked playing different kinds of sports. Over time, she kept progressing and became better with each training session. Her progress in basketball made her realize that it was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life — play basketball.

All the hard work she’d put in learning and practicing basketball allowed her to represent Jharkhand in the junior and senior national championships in 2018. The sports officials spotted her talent and asked her to participate in the U-18 training camp in Bengaluru. In this month-long camp, she got an opportunity to play alongside top cagers and learned many new strategies and techniques in the game. Since then, Anu’s career in sports as a basketball player has only been inching closer and closer towards success.

Anu gives credit to her school, Guru Govind Singh Public School for this positive change in her life. She admits that if her school had not provided her the opportunity, she’d still be struggling to find a career path. Her school backed her dream of becoming a basketball player more than anyone else. The fact that she was candid about her parent’s health conditions has made her a stronger girl who has only one goal in life now — to fight all shortcomings and take on the world with sheer grit.

Aishwarya Pissay secured the first position in the women’s category at FIM Baja World Cup 2019 off-road championship which was held in Varpalota, Hungary. The championship had four rounds in which Aishwarya earned 65 points. Rita Viera from Portugal won the second position with 61 points. After the podium ceremonies, Aishwarya said to the media, “It’s absolutely overwhelming. I am out of words. After what happened last year, my first international season, when I crashed in Spain Baja and suffered career-threatening injuries, to come out and win the championship, is a great feeling.” From her words, it’s pretty clear that determination and perseverance, despite the injuries and troubles that she faced, is what keeps her going. Born in a patriarchal and slightly misogynistic society that looks down at women who dare to cross their “boundaries”, things were obviously not easy for Aishwarya. But none of that mattered to her because she was totally confident about her goals and dreams.

“People also told me that it is not a thing that I should choose. But my motivation increased when I started participating in more rallies and races. With the support of sponsors, within a span of five years, I could win six national championships and two international championships,” Aishwarya said in an interview with a leading news channel. 23-year-old Aishwarya is one of the youngest Indian names to achieve an international title. However, according to her, this victory is a delayed one.

“I’m not really young in this field. But when we compare the situation in India, yes, I’m young. I think it’s absolutely a pride moment that I made a difference here and put India on the global motorsport. Just hope to see this change lead forward. I believe what I have done or what dignitaries like C S Santhosh has been doing is a hope to people. It definitely gives people hope that they can achieve outside the country and fly the tri-color flag,” she added.

Aishwarya recalls that her achievements are hard-earned. “I have had two major accidents. One in which I hurt my collar bone in 2017, then I had a bad fall and ruptured my pancreas in 2018. I underwent surgery and was in hospital for two months. There was not a single day in the hospital that I thought I would not be able to race again. That incident taught me the importance of never giving up,” she said. During the collar bone injury in 2017, a steel plate and seven screws were inserted into Aishwarya’s body. Her doctors asked her to stay away from racing for about three to four weeks. However, Aishwarya had a race in just five days, so she went ahead and won it! We’re not saying that you should go against your doctor when you need rest, but Aishwarya’s spirit and passion deserves a salute.

Aishwarya’s love for biking began about five years ago when she started going on rides during the weekends with her friends. Widowed At 18: How A Single Mom Became India’s 1st Woman Engineer!

Nobody with an ordinary mindset ever achieved anything extra-ordinary. People who have created history have always proved that they are capable of paving a new path of their own. And doing so isn’t an easy task. The society will question you, look down at you, and criticize you until you succeed. And you remain a black sheep unless you prove yourself. And once they are convinced that your efforts were not futile, they praise you and cheer for your success. This attitude is prevalent even today. But, can you imagine the hardships faced by an 18-year-old widowed, single-mother in the late 1930s when she decided to do something different than the society expected of her? Lalitha swam against the waves that tried to drown her and not only did she build a successful career but also created history by becoming India’s first woman engineer.

Lalitha marked this achievement when widows were expected to lead a life of banishment and isolation. Even though sati was illegal at the time, it was prevalent in many parts of India until mid-1990s (1). At a conference in New York, Lalitha said, “150 years ago, I would have been burned at the funeral pyre with my husband’s body.” From such a scenario to becoming an inspiration for women all over the world, Lalitha lived an incredible life in spite of being a widow. The story dates back to 1919 when Lalitha was born to a Telugu middle-class family as the fifth child of Pappu Subba Rao. Among the seven siblings including Lalitha, the boys were allowed to pursue higher studies but the education of the girls was restricted to the basic level. Lalitha was married off when she was only 15 and she gave birth to her daughter Syamala when she was 18. Within four months of her daughter’s birth, Lalitha lost her husband. But she wasn’t ready to accept the societal norms that restricted and limited her life in the name of widowhood.

This wasn’t an easy task for Lalitha. In an interview with a leading online portal, Syamala said, “When my father passed away, mom had to suffer more than she should have. Her mother-in-law had lost her 16th child and took out that frustration on the young widow. It was a coping mechanism and today, I understand what she was going through. However, my mother decided not to succumb to societal pressures. She would educate herself and earn a respectable job.”

This was the time when the field of medicine was widely popular among women who wanted to have a serious career. However, that required Lalitha to be at work during late hours and she didn’t want to leave her baby daughter alone for that long. So, she chose to follow the path of her brothers who were engineers. This proves that Lalitha is not only a strong independent woman, but she’s also a doting mother.

Lalitha’s father Pappu Rao was a professor at the College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) where he taught Electrical Engineering. He spoke to the then Principal and Director of Public Instruction about Lalitha’s admission and she became the first-ever female student in the history of CEG.

Talking about her mother’s college days, Syamala said, “Contrary to what people might think, the students at amma’s college were extremely supportive. She was the only girl in a college with hundreds of boys but no one ever made her feel uncomfortable and we need to give credit to this. The authorities arranged for a separate hostel for her too. I used to live with my uncle while amma was completing college and she would visit me every weekend.”

Rao invited more women to follow Lalitha’s path which became a solution to the problem of loneliness that Lalitha faced in her hostel. PK Thresia and Leelamma George soon joined the college and all three of them graduated together even though Lalitha was a senior. After her graduation, Lalitha worked at the Central Standard Organization, Shimla and also with her father in Chennai, for some time. After this, she joined the Associated Electrical Industries in Kolkata and settled in the city with her daughter.

In 1964, Lalitha was invited to attend the first International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists (ICWES) in New York. This is when Syamala realized how successful her mother was. She said, “But what I take from her life is her extreme patience towards people and the quality of doing instead of just talking. She never remarried and never made me feel the absence of a father in my life. She believed that people come into your life for a reason and leave when the purpose is over. I never asked her why she never got married again. But when my husband asked her, she had replied, “To take care of an old man again? No, thank you!””

Lalitha died when she was only 60. But the legacy that she left behind became the trailblazer for many women in our society. India is a land of vivid cultures and diversities. We are all aware of that, aren’t we? We also know that we were a part of the British colonies and were under their rule for a long time. But, apart from reading the iconic stories of our freedom fighters who fought and sacrificed their everything to make India a free country in our Social Studies textbooks, we don’t know anything more, right? Just raise your hands if you know about the penal codes that the British had laid down for its colonies that our country still follows? Are you aware of how unjust some those penal codes were?

And in this present time, we come across many modern freedom fighters who’ve been fighting in our Supreme Court to make our country free from the unjust penal codes. And an example of them are these two lawyers — Menaka Guruswamy and Arundhati Katju. These two were the lawyers who once again challenged the justification of the penal code Section 377 and fought against its existence. Let’s read a little more about them.

Section 377 is a part of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). It is an act that strongly criminalizes the idea of homosexuality. It was introduced in the year 1861 by the British during their rule in India. In the past few years, many have challenged this section and had failed in their attempts. However, on September 6, 2018, the Supreme Court of India came out with a historic verdict and decriminalized section 377 from the IPC (1). India celebrated this victory with galore and proved to the world that love and affection should never have any barriers, not even the gender ones.

It was Menaka Guruswamy and Arundhati Katju who represented the five petitioners in the Supreme Court and fought for the decriminalization of section 377. It was in the year 2013 that the Supreme Court of India had said homosexual people are second class citizens (2). It still stuck to the word ‘criminal’ while referring to them. Guruswamy and Katju didn’t feel right about this.

The two lawyers took it upon themselves to convince the Supreme Court that these anti-sodomy laws weren’t Indian, it was the British enforcing their beliefs on the countries they ruled once upon a time. And now that India is a free country, India needs to move away from such enforced beliefs and become a country that supports equality. The duo didn’t give up when the Supreme Court rejected their pleas in 2013. They returned with more power and in the year 2018 and helped India become free from the anti-homosexual believer tag. This victory brought priceless smiles across the face of many Indians who lived in the fear of falling in love amongst their own gender.

And this victory was also a personal one for these two lawyers who came out in the open exactly a year after the verdict of 2018 and told the world that they both were a couple. After an interview with the CNN that was posted on Twitter, Katju posted a picture of her with Guruswamy as part of the #SareeTwitter challenge and this went viral on the social media (3). These two lawyers became the first-ever Indian women lawyers to come out in the open as a couple. According to them, the historic verdict of last year was not just a victory for their country, but it was also a victory for them on a personal level.
