A Study Says That People Who Have Acne Age Slower

The study that was published in 2017 by the Journal of Investigative Dermatology focused on 1,205 female twins. These women were asked if they ever had acne issues and how they managed to escape from them. The length of the telomeres of these women was measured for the study since researchers believed that the whole connection between acne and slow aging can be explained with their help.

Telomeres are a part of our chromosomes and they are located at the tips of the chromosomal structure (2). They are like the small metal or plastic caps that are there on either end of our shoelaces. Just the way these plastic caps prevent the shoelaces from wearing out, telomeres protect our chromosomes from getting damaged. Every time our cell divides, the length of the telomeres get reduced which results in aging due to cell damage.

It was found that about a quarter of the women whose telomeres were studied, had acne and these women had longer telomeres when compared to the rest. This means that their telomeres could withstand more cell division during the course of time and protect their chromosomes for more years. This is all we know as of now and researchers suggest that more research has to be done in the area to get a better idea.

Those who get acne stay young for a longer period — this doesn’t mean that you have to keep the acne. You don’t have to suffer in pain because there are many methods to get rid of acne. Here are a few methods to help you solve your acne issues.

In fact, Okinawa’s residents have a higher chance by 40 percent to live longer when compared to people residing in other parts of the country.

The scientists tried to find out the reason behind this by analyzing the genes, diet, and lifestyle of the people of Okinawa. The scientists discovered that due to the history of isolation of the Okinawans, the people there have developed a very different genetic profile which helps protect their cells from contracting diseases and aging.

Just to learn and understand more about this longevity among the Okinawans, the scientists have set up the Okinawa Centenarian Study (OCS) in 1975 and have been running it actively since then. By the year 2016, the OCS successfully had studied 1,000 centenarians and came to two conclusions:

  • The Okinawans lived longer because they managed to delay all the age-related diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, cancer, and diabetes (2).
  • Another surprising fact they came face-to-face with is that all the Okinawans stick to a very rich carbohydrate diet.

1. అటుకుల ఉప్మా

  • అటుకులను ఐదు నిమిషాలపాటు నానబెట్టాలి.
  • ఒక బాండీలో నూనె వేసి దానిలో పల్లీలు, శెనగపప్పు, మినప్పప్పు, ఆవాలు జీలకర్ర, కరివేపాకు, సన్నగా తరిగిన పచ్చిమిర్చి వేసి వేయించాలి.
  • తర్వాత దానిలో కొద్దిగా ఉల్లిపాయలు వేసి పచ్చి వాసన పోయే వరకు వేయించాలి. ఉప్పు పసుపు చిటికెడు మెంతిపొడి వేసి వేయించాలి. ఆ తర్వాత ముందుగా నానబెట్టి పెట్టుకున్న అటుకులు వేసి బాగా కలిపి మరో రెండు నిమిషాలు మూతపెట్టి ఉంచాలి. చివరిగా నిమ్మరసం కలపాలి. ఇది పుదీనా చట్నీతో చాలా బాగుంటుంది.

  • ఒక పాత్రలో రాగిపిండి, బియ్యం పిండి, రవ్వ, పెరుగు, తగినంత ఉప్పు వేయండి. తగినన్ని నీళ్లు పోస్తూ కలిపి పావు గంట పాటు పక్కన పెట్టుకోండి.
  • కొత్తిమీర, పచ్చిమిర్చి, అల్లం ముక్కను సన్నగా తరిగి వేసుకోవాలి.
  • నాన్‌స్టిక్‌ పాన్‌ను స్టవ్‌పై పెట్టి దోశ పోసుకోవాలి.
  • కొద్దిగా నూనె వేసి చిన్న మంటపై కాల్చుకోవాలి. ఒకవైపు బాగా కాలిన తరువాత తిప్పి మరోవైపు కాల్చుకోవాలి.
  • పుదీనా చట్నితో ఈ రాగి దోశలు తింటే రుచిగా ఉంటాయి.

  • ఒక కప్పు మినప్పప్పు, ఒకటిన్నర కప్పు అరికలు తీసుకొని విడివిడిగా ఆరు గంటల పాటు నానబెట్టాలి.
  • తర్వాత వాటిని విడివిడిగా రుబ్బాలి.
  • తర్వాత ఒక అరకప్పు ఇడ్లీ రవ్వ తీసుకొని బాగా కడగాలి.

  • ఒక పాత్రలో రాగి పిండి తీసుకొని, వేడి నీళ్లు పోసి కలుపుకోవాలి.
  • తరువాత దానిలో ఇడ్లీ పిండి, ఉప్పు వేసి కలపండి. పిండి చిక్కగా ఉండేలా చూసుకోవాలి.

She Saw Cancer Stealing A Kid’s Life & Went On To Reform 30000+ Tobacco Addicts!

Many of us smoke and chew tobacco and yes, it’s indeed our personal choice. However, we hardly get to know the intensity of the consequences of this deadly habit, until we experience it ourselves. Which is why an oral cancer survivor is not likely to smoke again, and a liver cancer survivor would probably give up on the idea of drinking. While most of us take responsibility for what our actions might put us into, there are many people who smoke and drink without even knowing about their ill-effects. Sadly, this section of people includes children as well. This is why there are NGOs and doctors, who work day and night, to spread awareness and give counseling to help them out.

Dr. Sumedha Kushwaha, a dentist by profession, also took up the responsibility of spreading awareness about tobacco consumption. Her NGO, Aim To Terminate Tobacco and Cancer (ATTAC), has helped more than thirty thousand people with tobacco addiction. That’s a huge number, but we still need many more people like Dr. Sumedha in our country to make it a better place. Let’s get know more about Dr. Sumedha’s journey.

Dr. Sumedha holds an MDS in Public Health Dentistry. She completed her education in 2007, from ITS Dental College, Delhi. One of the things that struck her during her studies was the disturbing number of pre-cancerous patients, who she attended to in the Out Patient Department.

“The entire thrust of all we learned was about cancer. In a majority of cases, we found that the cause for it was the consumption of tobacco. While there are various awareness programs about the ill-effects of tobacco, a large section of people who are addicts, have no means of letting go of their addiction, and I wanted to do something about it,” she said in an interview with an online media website. This is probably why she had an urge to help people who were addicted to tobacco.

Everything changed for Dr. Sumedha when she met Raju (name changed), a 13-year-old child who was suffering from oral cancer. He was in so much pain that he couldn’t even open his mouth. Raju was only six when some older kids in the village introduced him to gutka. At first, he used it because he wanted to hang out with the older boys, but soon it became a habit. By the time Raju was thirteen, he was consuming gutka regularly. He realized that he had oral cancer when he attended the health camp in his village, where he met Dr. Sumedha.

She said that seeing the child suffer in pain broke something in her. According to her, the worst part of the whole story is that these children who get addicted to tobacco, know that their habit can lead them to a horrific disease and yet, they continue with it. Dr. Sumedha wanted to fight this ignorance because she couldn’t see the youth throwing away their beautiful lives, just like that. This is a major reason why she wanted to become a trained counselor.

With the aim of getting training in counseling, Dr. Sumedha joined a reputed hospital. But soon she realized that the money they were charging the patients was too much. This was true, especially for the majority of such patients, who were from underprivileged backgrounds. So, she started working with different NGOs that served this purpose, and at the same time, got her training in counseling at the hospital.

During her college days, whenever she had to attend medical camps in rural areas, Dr. Sumedha and her friends made sure to provide assistance to those people who lived in areas outside of the camp’s purview. She and her friends, went from one village to another, organizing camps on their own, even when they didn’t have much medical equipment with them. Dr. Sumedha was always the person who spoke about the purpose of the camp to the villagers, and this is probably why she turned out to be very good at counseling, later on in her life.

Dr. Sumedha and her friends set up ATTAC in 2014, with the aim of helping people who were addicted to tobacco, and to spread awareness on the same. The five major goals of the foundation are creating awareness, empowerment, caution, providing strategy, and assistance, and follow up with a cure. Most of the organization’s funding came from the Yuvraj Singh Foundation (YouWeCan Foundation). ATTAC also conducts talks in corporate spaces and charges 5000 to 10,000 Rupees for each talk. This money is divided amongst the health workers, who participate in that particular event. ATTAC has covered Tier 1 cities so far, and they hope to expand their services to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities as well.

With tobacco being one of the major killers in India, it’s imperative to educate people about the harmful effects of its consumption. Let’s pledge to help people who are addicted to tobacco, either by volunteering, donating money to organizations working with tobacco addicts, or simply by talking to someone who needs our help.

More often than not, when we see two women bursting into peals of laughter, we assume that it had to be over an exchange of salacious gossip. It’s a different matter altogether that they might have been sharing an innocent joke. However, when it comes to men, that’s not our line of reasoning. In our brains (and in the collective psyche of the society) men and gossip don’t go together. But science has proved this thinking wrong. How’s that? Read on to find out more.

The general idea is that gossip is nothing but a malicious way of rumor mongering. But have you ever wondered just how much time we humans devote to this apparently redundant activity? Though it might’ve not occurred to you, it certainly did to the researchers at the University of Riverside, in California. These researchers conducted 5 observational studies to see the nature of gossip. They wanted to know who indulges in it and how.

They fitted people under their observation with recorders and heard them talk and converse with their friends and family for a period of 2-5 days (1). What they found at the end of this observation period was quite surprising. Some of their most shocking findings were (2):

  • People (both men and women) in general, spent about 52 minutes gabbing about other people’s business. Yes, that’s a lot!
  • Unlike the popular belief, people who have less education and are in the lower-income earning group don’t gossip more than their wealthier, well-educated counterparts.
  • Younger people were more likely to indulge in negative gossip than older ones. Ah, truly, the youth is wasted on the young.
  • Women indulged more in neutral or positive gossip — that is, their gossip often revolved around a casual exchange of information or admiring someone or something. So much for the belief that women are catty.
  • Men spend as much time as indulging in idle chit-chat as women. Though women exceeded them in positive and neutral gossip (not surprising at all).
  • And most surprising of all, much of the gossip that takes place is neutral. Just a harmless exchange of banal information that gives people a way to connect with each other.

Threw you off, didn’t it? We certainly were when we first came across these findings. But, these findings also highlighted the fact that gossip is not the negative social tool we thought it to be. So, what exactly is the function of this infamous social activity?

In his research, Frank McAndrew, a professor of applied social psychology at Knox College, suggested that gossip was a remnant of our evolution. According to his theory, natural selection forced human beings to know as much as they could about their surroundings and people in their social circle so that they could form meaningful connections. It also helped them bypass certain alliances which could prove to be risky. And in the process, they also formed meaningful bonds with those who trusted them enough to share information with them (3).

Now, in the modern age, we still carry this instinct within ourselves, only now our social circle also includes celebrities. For why else would the whole world be torn about when Jennifer Aniston would find true love? But this instinct is not entirely vestigial in nature. It forms the crux of our social interactions. We all want something to talk about, and gossip provides us with enough steam to keep that conversation engine going.

Well, as deep as this is, it’s not as exciting as the plot of Gossip Girl, right? But it does prove that there’s more to our human interactions than what appears on the surface. And something as insignificant as gossip can be of much import to it.

Today, we live in a world where people record videos when someone’s going to die rather than step forward and help them. If you think about it, hundreds of assaults and rapes could have been stopped from happening if the people around reacted. Fortunately, among the silent spectators and pretentious protestors, we also have people like Bhargsetu Sharma. She is the 21-year-old NCC cadet whose bravery saved a young man’s life. Bhargsetu, who is also an animal lover, has saved thousands of animals by rescuing them and giving them the care they require.

She is a resident of Vadodara, Gujarat and is currently pursuing her Masters in Social Work. Her bravery and kind heart has made her a local hero. Want to know the story of Bhargsetu? Read on.

It was during the summer of last year that Bhargsetu Sharma saw the god of death right in front of her eyes. The then 20-year old NCC candidate and Indian army aspirant had just attended a training session for the Service Selection Board that day. On the same day, there was also a workshop conducted by Humans with Humanity, a community for animal rescue and welfare which Bhargsetu herself founded when she was just sixteen.

After the completion of the workshop, the volunteers wanted to go for a picnic and they asked Bhargsetu to join them. She agreed and they went to Mahi Sagar in Rasalpur for a short trip. “When we reached Mahi Sagar, I decided to swim in the deeper side of the river. Just when I was about to take the plunge, I heard screams. People were pointing out to the water and yelling, ‘Unko bacha lo’ (Save them),” recollects Bhargsetu during an interview with an online media website. There were two boys drowning by the deeper end of the river.

One of the boys were rescued by a local but his friend was not to be seen anywhere. Being an accomplished swimmer, Bhargsetu didn’t have much to think before diving into the water to search for the boy. “At first, I was standing at the highest point and tried searching for the boy. But, there was no movement or ripple in the water. As the crowd started panicking, I decided to dive into the river and continue the search. I swam for about 12 minutes, and as I neared the riverbed, I finally saw him. He was immobile, appeared lifeless. I couldn’t find a pulse and realized that he was going into cardiac arrest,” she said.

To help the man in the critical condition, Bhargsetu administered CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) on him. Since his jaws were locked, she inserted her fingers inside his mouth to get the water out carefully without blocking his breathing. To Bhargsetu’s horror, the man started biting her fingers as he went into a seizure. Being an animal rescuer, she had been bitten by many creatures. However, she recollects being bitten by a human as the most painful experience. Bhargsetu didn’t stop even if the man was hurting her because she knew if she stopped, his heart would stop too.

The brave cadet kept slapping the man to keep him conscious and after multiple efforts, the man asked her to stop hitting him in a feeble voice. We can imagine the happiness Bhargsetu would have felt at the moment. The healthy man is now a student in Singapore. She became the Wonderwoman of her town within no time and won several awards for her bravery including the Governor’s medal and the prestigious Raksha Mantri Padak.

The Animal Lover

Bhargsetu is an ardent animal lover and as we said earlier, she started Humans with Humanity when she was only sixteen! Growing up in a family full of animal lovers, she always shared a close bond with them. She claims to have saved over 38000 strays and birds till today. When she realized that she couldn’t handle the number of calls to rescue animals from different locations with her team, she created a Facebook group for the same purpose. Today, the community has more than 80 members who strive hard to rescue animals in distress.

“We want to register the community as an animal welfare NGO, and continue to impact the lives of many strays and distressed animals,” said Bhargsetu. The 21-year-old was again under the spotlight after she appeared on Roadies, one of MTV India’s most celebrated reality shows. The show has definitely garnered more fans for Bharsetu. According to her if someone believes in something strongly and follows it with all their heart, they can be a change-maker no matter how young they are. Wow, isn’t that a wonderful thought!

While most of them are non-cancerous, cancerous patches are seen very close to leukoplakia patches which is the reason why they are suspected to be an early symptom of oral cancer. Some people may get affected by hairy leukoplakia, a certain type of leukoplakia causes fuzzy, white patches that look like ridges or folds usually by the sides of the tongue. This type of leukoplakia occurs due to a weak immune system which is a result of diseases like AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) (4).

Papillae are tiny structures on our tongue that contain projections called microvilli. The microvilli have sensory cells that transmit messages to our brain. If you have an acid reflux problem, the stomach acid will rise up through your food pipe and damage these sensory cells. A person whose microvilli are damaged will find it difficult to sense taste as well as before. Acid reflux can make your papillae inflamed and you might feel constant burning sensation in your mouth. This situation can be aggravated if you eat spicy and oily food that will make your acid reflux worse. Acid reflux has to be treated on time because they can lead to the damage of your stomach walls. In extreme cases of acid reflux, you can even get painful ulcers (5).

6 Indian Print Ads And TV Commercials That Landed Into Controversy

David Ogilvy, the father of the modern advertising, once said to prospective copywriters and ad-makers, “Your role is to sell, don’t let anything distract you from the single purpose of advertising.”

Ogilvy, who is often looked up to as the God of advertising, saw it as a business skill, and actively discouraged people from looking at it from the perspective of art. But, how can one expect to discover new things and innovate if they don’t push the boundaries of their field a little, right?

And time and again, Indian copywriters and ad-makers have pushed the envelope to create memorable ad campaigns that have firmly imprinted the brand in the minds of its consumers. Be it Amul’s topical commentary cartoons or Cadbury Dairy Milk’s mushy ad campaigns, these ads always made the consumers look at the products fondly, but there are some which weren’t received so well.

Today, we have decided to look at a few such Indian print and TV ads that proved to be a bit too much for the audience to digest. Here they are:

1. This Print Ad For Tuff Shoes That Resulted In A Legal Battle (1995)

This black and white advertisement created quite a stir in its time. The bare bodies of supermodels Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman entwined in an erotic position with nothing except a python wrapped around them and a pair of Tuff Shoes covering their feet, upset a lot of people. So much so that it led to a filing of a case for indecent behavior against the models in a court. The advert was also dragged to the court by the wildlife protection authorities for illegal use of the snake.
The ad was ultimately banned.

2. Amul Macho Ad Featuring Model Sana Khan (2007)

If you happened to watch this ad with your mother or father by your side, you would have surely and awkwardly fumbled with the TV remote to skip the channel. Sexually suggestive, this ad was beyond the pale of the Indian audience. Soon enough the Indian Broadcasting Ministry banned the ad for being vulgar and indecent.

3. Sunny Leone’s Seductive Plea For Manforce Condoms (2017)

It makes sense for a condom brand to tie up with a former adult star turned country’s favorite item girl to promote their product. But this decision cost Manforce heavily when they tried to launch their ad by capitalizing on the occasion of Navratri (the 9-night festival celebrating the various incarnations of Goddess Durga). The copy line which translates to “This Navratri, play, but with love” drew on the playing of Garba (a popular Gujarati Navratri folk ritual). It drew the ire of All India Confederation Of Traders. Ultimately, Manforce had to withdraw the ad and tender an apology as well.

4. This Motorola Ad Which Never Made It To Our TV Screens (2008)

Now, that you’ve had a look at it, we are pretty sure that you agree that it was for a good reason. This ad which might have been trying to prove that Motorola’s new phone was nifty little gadget with its snazzy camera, ended up marketing it as every voyeur’s dream tool. It’s not a surprise that it was never released on television.

5. This Ad For A Swiss Inner Wear Company Featuring Bipasha Basu (1998)

Even though the inner wear company for which this ad was made disappeared from people’s radar quite soon, the ad managed to rake in quite a bit of controversy. In the print ad, the then-couple Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu were seen indulging in a few intimate moments wherein Dino was captured tugging at Bipasha’s underwear with his teeth.

The ad was banned after several women organizations protested against it. Later on, Bipasha went on to claim that those pictures captured some private moments between the couple and should never have been used or photographed in the first place.

6. Wild Stone Ad That Was Deemed Too Steamy (2007)

 

Even as you were going through this list, you would have realized that the overt portrayal of sexuality and religion are never a good combo. This ad for Set Wet deo ignored this unsaid rule by setting its racy ad in the context of Durga Puja, much to the dismay of its chaste Indian customer base. This ad along with other deodorant ads, which capitalized on sexuality, were banned by the Indian Broadcasting Ministry for portraying women as “lustily hankering after men under the influence of such deodorants” (1). It turns out, sex doesn’t always sell in our country.

Creative. Yes. But did these ads succeed in hitting the nail on the head? We are not sure.

कपालभाति प्राणायाम तीन प्रकार के होते हैं।

  1. वातकर्म कपालभाति – इसमें व्यक्ति सीधे ध्यान की मुद्रा में बैठकर अपनी एक उंगली से एक नासिका छिद्र को बंद करके दूसरी नासिका छिद्र से सांस खींचता है और तुरंत ही दूसरी तरफ की नासिका छिद्र को बंद करके सांस छोड़ता है।
  1. व्युत्क्रम कपालभाती – इस योग में व्यक्ति नाक से गुनगुना पानी खींचता है और मुंह से निकालता है।
  1. शीतकर्म कपालभाती – यह व्युत्क्रम कपालभाती का उल्टा है। इसमें पानी को मुंह में लेकर नाक से बाहर निकाला जाता है।

कपालभाति प्राणायाम को आप हमेशा सुबह करें, क्योंकि सुबह का माहौल शांत और शुद्ध होता है। इससे आपको ज्यादा फायदा मिलेगा। ध्यान रहे कि कपालभाति करने से पहले और बाद में थोड़ी देर तक कुछ न खाएं।

  • कपालभाति प्राणायाम करने से पहले बैठने के लिए साफ और स्वच्छ योग मैट या कोई चादर बिछा लें।
  • अब आप पद्मासन, सुखासन या वज्रासन किसी भी आरामदायक मुद्रा में बैठ जाएं। अपने दोनों हाथों को घुटनों पर रखें।
  • अपनी रीढ़ की हड्डी को सीधा रखते हुए ध्यान की मुद्रा में बैठें।
  • अब अपने मन की सारी चिंताओं को भूल जाएं।
  • अब गहरी लंबी सांस लें और धीरे-धीरे छोड़ दें। ऐसे कम से कम दो बार जरूर करें।
  • फिर नाक से सांस को बाहर की ओर निकालें। जब सांस को बाहर निकालें, तो पेंट को अंदर की ओर खींचें।
  • ऐसा आपको लगातार करना है। बीच में रुकना नहीं है। साथ ही ध्यान रहे कि मुंह को बंद रखें। उससे न तो सांसा छोड़ें या लें।
  • सिर्फ नाक से ही सांस को बाहर छोड़ना है और हल्की-हल्की सांस नाक से ही लेनी है।
  • ऐसा 15 से 20 बार करने से कपालभाति प्राणायाम का एक राउंड होता है।
  • आप ऐसे तीन राउंड कर सकते हैं और फिर थोड़ी देर सुखासन की मुद्रा में बैठकर ध्यान लगाएं। इससे आपके शरीर और मन को आराम मिलेगा।
