The recent Instagram photos of Kirstie Alley will take your breath away. The 60-something Star Trek II- The Wrath of Khan actress has lost about 50 pounds (kgs) and looks 20 years younger. Although age is just a number, women do go through a lot of hormonal ups and downs that affect their body composition, appearance, and mental health. But if you follow a healthy lifestyle, whatever age you are, you will look ravishing, feel better about yourself, and glow with confidence. Read on to know how Kirstie Alley tackled her fluctuating weight and maintained her womanly curves successfully. Get inspired and get back on track. Swipe up!

When Did Kirstie Alley Start Gaining Weight?

In an interview with Wendy Williams, Kirstie Alley revealed that she was a foodie and loved to overindulge in all kinds of fattening foods, such as cheeseburgers, pies, and brownies. However, until she was 52, she did not gain weight. But after hitting early menopause, she started gaining weight. It never occurred to her that it was due to her eating habits because consuming high-calorie foods was what she did all her life.

And this is where age and a woman’s changing physiological functions come into the picture. So, if you are over 30 and lead a sedentary life, start taking care of your health.

In another interview, she said, “I always joked that my holidays lasted from Halloween to New Year’s Eve, and maybe even into Valentine’s Day. I would think it was okay for me to eat whatever I wanted during those months.”

Do you feel the same way? If yes, you are not alone. Most dieters tend to cheat on the weekends, and we all know how that goes. Kirstie Alley started gaining weight, and before she realized it, she weighed 228 pounds (103 kgs).

Kirstie Alley lost about 75 pounds and got back in shape and the right weight (145 pounds) for her age and height (5’8”). And she did it with the help of Jenny Craig. She worked with Jenny Craig from 2005 to 2008 and was also her spokesperson. She took the help of exercise and healthy eating and had to get rid of all her bad eating habits. She appeared in a bikini on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her tremendous weight loss and womanly curves made her look hot (somehow, she doesn’t like it now!), and this gave many women a new zeal to take their health seriously. But was she able to keep the weight off? Find out next.

Why Did Kirstie Alley Regain The Weight?

In 2011, Kirstie Alley launched her weight loss products and did a small stint in Dancing With The Stars. Many believe that she lost the weight by dancing 5 hours a day and consuming 1200 calories. But Shape Magazine experts predicted that once she’d lose her motivation to show off her body on TV shows, she’d regain the weight. Unfortunately, they were right.

Now that she was not a spokesperson for Jenny Craig and not in the public eye, she started with her now-famous emotional eating. Various reasons, like her career and personal life, made her an emotional eater. Why only her? In fact, I am sure most of us are guilty of it. A little bit of stress, and we reach out to the high-sugar and high-sodium foods in our kitchen cabinets.

Kirstie also appeared in the TV series, Fat Actress, and told that she was just not able to figure out her meals. She also told the Today Show, “The main thing I realized about myself is I really need to be held accountable for things because I have a tendency to go sort of wild. Food is one of the things where I can go sort of wild.”

But things were about to change. She lost the weight again.

Wait! Kirstie Alley Lost The Weight Again?

In 2015, Kirstie Alley started the Jenny Craig program again. And not because she was motivated by TV shows or her own line of weight loss products – she did it for her health. The result? She lost a whopping 50 pounds and looked stunning.

She works out three times a week. She said, “I do stay active, but I hate the gym. It bores the bejeezus out of me. I’m not a lunging, squatting human, I’ll do things that sound fun like a dance class or yoga, or I’ll walk or run. Sometimes it’s just whatever my friends are doing.”

Also, she doesn’t eat after 7 p.m. However, she says that she doesn’t follow a “diet” diet. She told People magazine, “I can have anything I want, I’m just counting the calories. I know how many calories 6 oz. of tenderloin is. I know that pasta is 200 calories in a cup. So as long as I keep steady that way, and count it up, it’s easy to count because I know how many calories those foods that I really love are.”

So far, she has maintained her new weight successfully. And the points that you can take away from her weight loss story are summed in this last segment.

How Can You Lose Weight And Maintain It?

Mama June Shannon’s 300-pound weight loss in 2017 on her show From Not To Hot made jaws drop. The 38-year-old reality star decided to give healthy living a fair shot last year. And look what happened! She has also been successful in maintaining the weight. Read on if you want to know all about Mama June’s incredible weight loss and how you can fine tune your lifestyle to shed inches off. Swipe up!

Who Is Mama June?

Mama June Shannon’s actual name is June Shannon. She was born on August 10, 1979, and was raised in Georgia. She is a mother of 4 children, and her daughter, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson was a contestant in the child beauty pageant show, Toddlers & Tiaras. Soon, June Shannon’s family got their own show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The next big step toward stardom was June’s own weight loss journey show, Mama June: From Not To Hot on WeTV.

So, how did she lose all that weight in such a short span? Find out next.

How Did Mama June Lose 300 Pounds?

Mama June weighed 460 lbs, and her BMI was clearly in the obese range. That’s why she decided to go for gastric sleeve surgery. In this type of weight loss surgery, a major part of the stomach is removed. As a result, the patients will not be able to eat as much food as they did before the surgery. Mama June underwent surgery on her show From Not To Hot.

After the surgery, she had to under other surgeries in her arms, tummy, and neck to get rid of the extra folds of skin, which are generally the aftermath of weight loss surgeries. She admitted that her daughters were making fun of her “turkey neck,” and that’s why she went for fat-freezing treatment in her neck area. But all that surgery can only work to an extent. To keep the weight off, she takes care of what she eats and works out. So, let’s take a look at her diet and lifestyle.

How Does Mama June Maintain Her Weight?

Since her gastric sleeve surgery, Mama June has started to take care of her health. After all, who wants to spend over $75,000 for weight loss surgery again and again? She has revealed her secret to keeping the weight off. And here’s how she maintains her weight:

  • Walking

In an interview with Daily Mail, she said, “Once you get started with the kids you don’t think about it, you’re walking and you’re like ‘I’ve already walked three miles!” She also said that she keeps herself busy, which prevents her from wanting to eat every time. She told In Touch Weekly, “Honestly, when I first started losing weight, it was just being more active, being busy with the show and doing more things with Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

  • Healthy Diet

She also takes the help of her personal trainer, Natasha Fett, who is also her diet coach. Natasha started incorporating healthy eating into June’s lifestyle slowly. She did not take away Mama June’s all favorite foods completely. Fett recommended June to eat carbs early in the day and reduce her fat intake later in the day. She also allowed Mama June to consume healthy fats like avocado and almond butter, hummus, celery, and slow-digesting foods like brown rice, lentils, sweet potatoes, and beans.

  • Tea And Coffee

Tea and coffee may sound terrible to people who do not like these caffeinated beverages. But the reason Fett allowed tea and coffee is that Mama June, like many of us, had a wrong notion that drinking protein shakes would help her lose the weight. In fact, protein shakes are loaded with added sugar, which is not apt for those who are trying to lose weight and not very active. Tea and coffee help suppress appetite, have 0-3 calories (without sugar and cream), and are great energy boosters.

  • Keto Diet

Recently, Mama June revealed that the Ketogenic diet or Keto diet is helping her stay slim. She follows a high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carb diet – which means a lot of cheese, chicken, eggs, and avocado, low or no bread, pasta, and certain veggies.

  • Large Breakfast

Having a good and heavy breakfast is essential for keeping the weight off and preventing overeating junk food throughout the day. Not skipping breakfast is another way to maintain the lost weight.

  • Exercise

Mama June started with a low-impact exercise like walking. Now, that she has lost a lot of weight and somewhat recovered from the surgery, she is ready to take on some high-intensity cardio to took slender and toned.

  • Weight Loss Supplements

Mama June also takes a couple of weight loss supplements – apple cider vinegar and garcinia cambogia for weight loss. These work by suppressing the appetite, increasing thermogenesis, and preventing new fat cell synthesis. Talk to your doctor before taking these supplements for weight loss.

These are the tips that Mama June follows to avoid regaining the weight. They can help you too if you are struggling to lose weight.

Recent news revealed that Mama June lost eyesight in her right eye and had to undergo eye surgery. In the process of undergoing four surgeries for her eyes, she regained 25 lbs. In an interview, she said, “I can’t do anything and have to lay down most of the time and take care of my vision.” She also added, “I can lose the weight, I know that. And I know I don’t want to go back over 200 pounds. I’m paying attention to it (vision) more.”

Mama June has done a commendable job in keeping the weight off. Her zeal to follow a healthy lifestyle is inspiring. If you are finding it difficult to maintain the lost weight, reassess your lifestyle, and you will know why you are not able to sustain the weight loss. And if you have any questions regarding weight loss, please leave a comment below. I’ll be happy to answer them. Take care!

If protein is the building block of the human body, amino acids are the building blocks of protein. You may not be an athlete training for the upcoming Olympics. Neither could acing your national bodybuilding contest be amongst your priorities. But you still need amino acids. They improve your mood, concentration, physical health, sleep, and several other physiological phenomena. Which is what we will discuss in this post. Keep reading.

Table Of Contents

What Are Amino Acids? What Do They Do?

Simply stated, these are organic compounds that combine to form proteins. When the protein you take is broken down by the body, amino acids are left behind. The body then uses these amino acids to make proteins and help the body repair tissues, grow, and perform various other bodily functions. Your body also uses the amino acids to produce energy.

There are various amino acids, classified into different groups. Knowing them will help you better understand their benefits.

Back To TOC

What Are The Different Amino Acids?

Amino acids can be categorized into three groups:

1. Essential Amino Acids

These cannot be synthesized by the body and must come from food. They have a longer half-life than the non-essential ones. Also, even if one essential amino acid (or a non-essential amino acid) is absent, the remaining of them cannot be used.

  • Histidine
  • Isoleucine
  • Leucine
  • Lysine
  • Methionine
  • Phenylalanine
  • Threonine
  • Tryptophan
  • Valine

2. Nonessential Amino Acids

These can be synthesized by the body, and we don’t need them through food.

  • Alanine
  • Asparagine
  • Aspartic Acid
  • Glutamic Acid

3. Conditional Amino Acids

These are not essential, except during illness and extreme stress.

  • Arginine
  • Cysteine
  • Glutamine
  • Tyrosine
  • Glycine
  • Ornithine
  • Proline
  • Serine

There are various food sources that offer amino acids. But we will get to that later. First, let’s take a look at the benefits amino acids have to offer.

Back To TOC

What Are The Benefits Of Amino Acids?

1. Amino Acids Fight Inflammation

Studies have shown that orally administered amino acids display anti-inflammatory activity (1). And there is another study that talks about how branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), which include valine, leucine, and isoleucine, can help fight inflammation as well (2).

2. Boost Muscle Growth

2. Boost Muscle Growth

Shutterstock

Arginine is one amino acid, which, as per studies, has been found to boost lean body mass and strength (3).

BCAAs are the primary building blocks of muscles – they help in the growth and repair of muscle tissue. Arginine improves blood flow to the muscles. Glutamine increases water retention in the muscles and signals cell growth.

3. Reduce Fatigue

One Swedish study shows that ingestion of BCAAs can reduce exercise exertion and mental fatigue and even improve cognitive performance post-exercise (4).

Amino acids also aid better sleep, and this can help reduce fatigue the following morning.

Another study shows how the amino acid tryptophan can help relieve fatigue caused by different levels of stress.

So, if you want to reduce fatigue and improve your endurance levels, amino acids can be a safe bet.

4. Promote Weight Loss

Research shows that amino acids might boost fat loss. They can improve muscle synthesis and lead to healthy fat loss as a consequence (5).

BCAAs have also shown to suppress appetite, and this can contribute to weight loss as well (6). This can also mean a reduced risk of obesity.

5. Boost Immunity Levels

Dietary supplementation of amino acids has shown to enhance immunity status and prevent infectious diseases (7).

Among these amino acids, glutamine seems to have the upper hand. It is recognized as a potent immuno-nutrient as it can enhance immune function to a great extent. There are several studies that support the importance of this amino acid in clinical nutrition.

According to another report by the Cambridge University press, metabolism of amino acids holds great promise in boosting immune function. More importantly, these amino acids can also elevate your energy levels and accelerate wound healing.

6. Amino Acids Improve Cognitive Health

6. Amino Acids Improve Cognitive Health

Shutterstock

The amino acid tyrosine was found to have beneficial effects on cognitive performance – more so during exposure to high levels of stress. And tryptophan was found to improve brain function (8).

Research also tells us that supplements containing amino acids can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety as they are converted to neurotransmitters that boost mood (9).

7. Can Delay Aging

Amino acid supplementation can play a role in the prevention (and treatment) of sarcopenia, which is the loss of muscle tissue due to aging (10).

Arginine and carnitine help repair damaged DNA and promote skin firmness.

8. Promote Hair Growth

Your hair is made of amino acids, which is why it makes sense to believe that amino acids can promote hair growth. Though they are not a miracle potion, they sure do encourage stronger and thicker hair growth.

The amino acids particularly beneficial for hair growth include arginine, lysine, cysteine, and methionine. These amino acids work by producing keratin, the most important protein for hair. They also create red blood cells, which deliver more oxygen to the hair follicles and promote hair growth.

These are the various ways amino acids can keep you healthier. How do you make sure you get enough of them?

Back To TOC

What Are The Food Sources Of Amino Acids?

Following are the major food groups that contain the most amino acids:

  • Animal Proteins

These are also called the complete proteins. They include beef, pork, chicken, turkey, and eggs. Even dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt contain amino acids. But ensure you choose lean meats (low-fat or fat-free).

  • Seafood

These include fish like salmon, halibut, and tuna. They also contain omega-3 fatty acids that have great benefits.

  • Nuts, Legumes, And Seeds

These are incomplete proteins as not one specific food contains all the essential amino acids (unlike animal proteins). But consuming a combination of nuts, legumes, and seeds can help. Some of these foods include soybeans, lentils, chickpeas, pinto beans, black beans, almonds, and walnuts.

  • Whole Grains

Quinoa is one food in this group that contains all the essential amino acids and is hence a complete protein. Other foods include whole wheat bread, whole grain pasta, and long grain rice.

Include these foods in your regular diet, and you are good to go. You can also include whey protein (in case you do physical exercise) after consulting your doctor, nutritionist or trainer.

So, does this mean anyone can take amino acids? No!

Back To TOC

What Are The Side Effects Of Amino Acids?

Excess intake of amino acids (both BCAAs and otherwise) can lead to certain side effects like:

  • Issues During Pregnancy And Breastfeeding

There is not enough information on this. So, stay safe and avoid use.

  • Lung Failure

Use of BCAAs in patients with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) has been linked to lung failure. Keep patients away from them.

  • Liver Damage In Chronic Alcoholics

Use of BCAAs in alcoholics can lead to liver disease and subsequent brain damage.

  • Abdominal Issues

Certain people experience bloating, diarrhea, and even abdominal pain with arginine supplements. Arginine also lowers blood pressure, and this can be a problem if you are already on blood pressure medication – your blood pressure might be lowered way too much.

  • Impaired Blood Sugar Control (During Surgery)

Amino acids (including BCAAs) can interfere with blood sugar levels. This might interfere with blood sugar control during and after surgery. Stop taking amino acids at least two weeks before a scheduled surgery.

Conclusion

Amino acids constitute our body, which is why they must be an integral part of our diet. Start taking them today, and see your health changing for the better.

How To Get Rid Of Hangnails

$

Hangnails are a real pain. They tend to tear and bleed, leaving your finger sore and swollen. If you’re like me, the first thing you do at the sight of a hangnail is resist the urge to pick it…and then pick it anyway. Oops! Major nope. You see, this will only worsen the situation as it can get infected when exposed to fungus and bacteria. Yes, it is gross and scary! If you’re hung up on the throbbing pain of that hangnail, we’ve got solutions. Read on to find out more!

What Is A Hangnail?

A hangnail refers to that tiny piece of skin which separates from your cuticle. A hangnail is especially painful when it’s still attached to your nail bed or the live portion of your skin.

What Causes Hangnails?

Have you noticed that hangnails tend to occur more frequently during the cold winter months? If you have dry skin, you are even more susceptible to these pesky little suckers. This is because dry skin is more vulnerable to damage caused by harsh soaps, water, and low temperature.

How To Get Rid Of Hangnails

How To Get Rid Of Hangnails _1

Shutterstock

If you notice a hangnail, DO NOT rip it off. This is essential if you want to get rid of it without putting yourself at a higher risk of infection. Here’s what you need to do instead!

What You Need
  1. A large bowl
  2. Warm water
  3. Vitamin E oil/olive oil
  4. Cuticle nipper
  5. Antibacterial ointment

Step By Step Tutorial

Step 1: Fill a large bowl with warm water and soak your fingers in it for 10 to 15 minutes. If you want to moisturize them, add a few drops of olive oil or vitamin E oil to the water.
Step 2: Dry your hand and use a sterilized and sharp cuticle nipper to cut off the base of the hangnail. This will prevent your hangnail from getting caught on things. However, make sure you don’t cut off more skin than required – this can be painful too.
Step 3: Apply an antibacterial ointment to the area to prevent infection. If your hangnail was embedded a little too deep, now is a good time to wrap a band-aid around it.
Step 4: Moisturize the hangnail area with some vitamin E oil multiple times a day until it fully heals. This step is crucial especially after washing your hands. You can also use petroleum jelly, coconut oil or olive oil to moisturize the area and combat dryness.

Hangnails are a pain to deal with. However, there are a few simple things that you can do to ensure you don’t get them in the first place. Just follow the tips given below and you’ll be set!

Tips: A Guide To Preventing And Treating Hangnails

  • Keep Your Nail Beds Moisturized

Dry skin is an invitation for hangnails. It’s important to keep your hands and nail beds moisturized by using either a hand cream or vitamin E oil regularly. It’s a good idea to wear a pair of rubber gloves while washing your dishes to protect your hands from harsh soaps and detergents.

  • Cut Off Hangnails While They Are Short

Instead of ripping your skin off or picking on it, use a cuticle nipper to cut off a hangnail as soon as you spot it. The more you wait, the worse it gets. It is also advisable to trim your nails frequently and to get a manicure regularly. This will prevent hangnail development to a great extent.

  • Stop Biting Your Nails

Biting your nails is a straight-up terrible habit. It damages your nails and the area that surrounds them. This increases your chances of developing hangnails.

  • Get Rid Of Acetone

Nail polish removers that contain high amounts of acetone significantly dry out your hands and nail beds. Chuck them out and try something milder. Use a remover that contains moisturizing ingredients like glycerin and vitamin E.

  • Eat Nutritious Food

Maintaining a balanced diet is crucial for maintaining your overall health (not just to prevent hangnails). Eat foods that are rich in iron and calcium. If you don’t get enough vitamins through your daily diet, consider taking vitamin and biotin supplements.

Hangnails are annoying. They are super common and tend to become a nagging and ongoing problem for many of us. You can solve this problem by making a few changes and taking certain precautions to prevent them. It’s also important to deal with them in the right way. We hope this article comes in handy for you to effectively treat that hangnail. If you have any questions or suggestions, leave them in the comments section below!

Expert’s Answers For Readers’ Questions

How to get rid of hangnails without nail clippers?

If you can’t get your hands on a nail clipper, simply put a band-aid over the hangnail until you get one. It’s the safest and most efficient removal technique. Don’t pick on it or trim it with scissors – it’s not advisable.

How to get rid of an infected hangnail?

Identifying an infected hangnail is easy. It is swollen, red, painful, warm, and may have a pus-filled abscess at the edge of the nail. To get rid of it, soak your hands in warm water for 15 minutes, trim the hangnail, and apply an antibiotic cream to speed up recovery. If you still don’t see any improvement or if the condition worsens, consult a doctor.

5 Foods That Can Change Your Mood

Have you ever wondered why we order ourselves a big bar of chocolate when our mood is at its worst? Or have you given a thought as to why we are asked to eat bananas when our energy reserves are running low? It’s because food can greatly influence our mood. There are foods that can encourage bad moods or even slide one towards depression, and there are foods that can instantly boost your mood and make you feel like the world is a perfect place to live in (1), (2).

How Can Food Alter Your Mood?

How Can Food Alter Your Mood

Shutterstock

Our daily diet can make a great deal of change to our moods. The number of nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants, probiotics and other essential fats in our food can determine our physical as well as our mental well-being (3). Some foods that taste like a piece of heaven on our plate can leave you feeling lethargic and dull (sugars and high-fat foods), while other average tasting foods have enough scientific backing that they can elevate our mood (4).

Since we humans are a moody lot, it becomes all the more important to ensure that our diet includes more of happy foods rather than those deceiving Instagram-worthy foods that leave you at a higher risk of obesity, anxiety, and depression. A research conducted by BMC medicine has found that those who were sputtering from mild depression and anxiety showed considerably better moods with a healthier diet (5). So, we have created a list of all the happy foods that you should have in your armory. We have also furnished you with a list of foods that you should show the door to.

1. Dark Chocolate

1. Dark Chocolate

Shutterstock

Dark chocolate and raw cocoa beans contain polyphenols (a type of antioxidant usually found in plants). It’s because of these that the chocolates have a calming effect on us. Dark chocolates have the ability to stimulate the production of endorphins—a chemical that creates feelings of pleasure. Additionally, chocolate is also high in serotonin and can elevate your mood (6), (7).

Stay away from milk chocolates and other chocolates that have less than 72 percent of cacao.

2. Fermented Foods And Probiotics

2. Fermented Foods And Probiotics

Did you know that you had a second brain? Don’t strain your neurons. We are talking about your gut; it is often dubbed as your second brain. So the foods you eat need to keep the bacteria in your gut happy, and that’s possible only when you eat fermented foods like kimchi, yogurt, kefir, kombucha, etc (8). These probiotics reduce social anxiety and depression (9).

Stay away from Soy yogurt, a fermented yogurt that is rich in probiotics but also abundant in omega-6 fatty acids that block the mood enhancing omega-3 fatty acids (10).

3. Blueberries And Berries

3. Blueberries And Berries

Shutterstock

Berries are a great source of antioxidants and are great mood elevators. Blueberries are packed with health benefits and can protect your brain from Alzheimer’s by up to 35 percent (11).

Stay away from salted peanuts, and other chaknas that are high in sodium, salt, and MSG (monosodium glutamate) that are known to trigger mood swings.

4. Hazelnuts, Walnuts, And Almonds

4. Hazelnuts, Walnuts, And Almonds

If you don’t want to go nuts, snack on some nuts. Studies have found that a daily intake of about 30 grams of assorted nuts (hazelnuts, walnuts, and almonds) can prevent depression to a great extent (12). Also, these nuts are rich in vitamin E.

Stay away from salted and fried potato chips and other junk foods that satiate your hunger for a short term. They are packed with omega-6 fatty acids that hinder the effect of mood enhancers in the body (13).

5. Fish And Fish Oil

5. Fish And Fish Oil

Shutterstock

We love seafood because it is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, that prevents the onset of depression and keeps anxiety, or bad moods at an arm’s length (the kind of arm that extends from Kashmir to Kanyakumari) (14). Fish oil and fish can uplift your mood greatly if you include these in your diet.

Stay away from cold cut meats, sausages, and other meats that are doused with preservatives. These food additives make it easy for consumption but they leave you with mood swings and headaches. It’s always better to get raw meat and cook it from the scratch.

Not all days are the same— there are the good, bad, and the worst of days. But our food influences our moods greatly. So, be mindful of what goes in the stomach. Keep all the processed and junk foods at a distance. They do more harm than good to us. Try eating clean for a couple of weeks and make little changes. Use honey instead of sugar, fermented foods instead of dairy products, green tea instead of sodas, black pepper in place of salt, and fresh fruits instead of sugar-coated desserts.

Being happy is a state of mind, but you need to cultivate this state of mind through your food habits and everyday routine. Eat happily to be happy. What are your go-to happy foods? Tell us in the comments below

Imagine hundreds of tiny needles poking the skin all over your face. How does it sound? Painful, right? But, here’s the thing – it is the hottest trend in the beauty industry right now.

From acne scars to enlarged pores, microneedling is currently the answer to all your skin-related woes. Here is everything you need to know about this skin care trend.

Table Of Contents

What Is Microneedling?

What Is Microneedling

Shutterstock

A needle is probably the last thing that you would want to put on your face. However, this procedure has been around for a while. The practice of microneedling was introduced in the early 90s, though it has gained traction only in the past few years.

Microneedling is a procedure in which thousands of tiny needles are used to create puncture wounds on the topmost layer of your skin. Don’t worry, they feel like pinpricks and don’t damage your skin. All this tricks your skin into thinking that it is injured and accelerates collagen production and healing. Microneedling is performed by trained dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and aestheticians.

This is a minimally invasive procedure and is considered safe (1). It is used to improve skin texture and treat skin issues such as wrinkles, acne scarring, fine lines, brown spots, and pigmentation.

Its ability to give facial skin a youthful appearance has made microneedling extremely popular among skin care fanatics. However, you will need multiple sessions to see the full results of this treatment.

You must be wondering how this procedure is carried out. Here’s some insight into what goes on behind-the-scenes.

Microneedling: The Procedure

Microneedling The Procedure

Shutterstock

First off, your skin needs to be prepped before you undergo the procedure. Generally, your skin is prepared with a formulation containing vitamins A and C a month before microneedling. This pumps up the collagen production in your skin (1).

As for the actual procedure, microneedling is performed under topical anesthesia. Here’s what you can expect on the day of the procedure:

  • The dermatologist/plastic surgeon/aesthetician will start off by applying an antiseptic and cleaning your skin with a saline solution.
  • Your skin is then stretched with hands, and a dermaroller (a pen-like device with needles) is rolled onto it 5 times in all directions (vertical, horizontal, and diagonal).
  • There will be pinpoint bleeding from the punctures, which is controlled easily.
  • Once the procedure is over, a saline formula or an ice pack is applied to the area.
  • A collagen enhancing serum is also applied to the area.

The microneedling procedure is repeated on a regular basis over the next few months.

The post-care routine that you follow after microneedling makes all the difference. Here are some things you need to do after undergoing this procedure.

Aftercare Tips For Microneedling

  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Stay out of the sun. Cover your face properly if you do step out in the sun. Do not apply just any sunscreen on your face. Your skin’s pores remain open after the procedure, and the harmful chemicals present in these sunscreens can get absorbed into your skin easily and damage it. Use only the products suggested by the microneedling professional.
  • Keep It Clean: Use a very mild cleanser to clean your face during the 72 hours after the procedure. Do not use any harsh products on your face the following week.
  • No Active Ingredients: Avoid using any skin care products that contain active ingredients like retinol, alpha hydroxy acids, and other such chemicals as your skin will be highly sensitive following the procedure.
  • Avoid Using Makeup: Let your skin breathe and recover after microneedling. Avoid applying makeup on your face as the chemicals in the products can irritate your skin.
  • Stimulate It With Collagen: You will be prescribed collagen stimulating peptides after microneedling. Use them religiously to assist your skin in producing more collagen and aid quick recovery.
  • Drink Plenty Of Water: Staying hydrated helps your skin recover faster.

Microneedling is a fairly painless procedure that offers a ton of benefits. Here a few ways in which microneedling works wonders on your skin.

What Are The Benefits Of Microneedling?

1. Reduces Fine Lines And Wrinkles, And Tightens The Skin

1. Reduces Fine Lines And Wrinkles, And Tightens The Skin

Shutterstock

Microneedling promotes collagen and elastin production in your skin, creating a youthful glow. A study observed that collagen production improved after multiple sessions of microneedling (2). When your collagen levels increase, your skin becomes supple and more elastic. It also reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and the size of pores. In other words, it can help you shed years off your face.

2. Heals Visible Scars On Your Face

Acne scars are notorious for not fading. However, a study conducted in 2009 found that microneedling helped in minimizing acne scars and improved the appearance of skin. It was found to be effective in healing boxcar and rolling scars (3).

3. Minimizes Pigmentation and Sun Damage

3. Minimizes Pigmentation and Sun Damage

Shutterstock

Microneedling refreshes the appearance of your skin by minimizing the appearance of pigmentation caused by excessive sun exposure. A study published in 2015 found that microneedling could reduce melasma effectively, a condition that causes dark patches on the skin (4).

4. Shrinks Skin Pores

If you think that microneedling enlarges skin pores, you are mistaken. It helps in shrinking pores by stimulating collagen development around them.

5. Improves The Effectiveness Of Topical Medicine

5. Improves The Effectiveness Of Topical Medicine

Shutterstock

Most of the products that you apply on your face are not properly absorbed by your skin. This affects the efficacy of the product. A study has shown that microneedling can help topical medicine penetrate your skin more effectively, thus helping you get the full benefit of its ingredients. The micro-holes created by the microneedling process make your skin readily absorb whatever is applied to it (5).

You get the maximum benefits of microneedling when it is done by a professional. But, the device that they use also plays a crucial role. Following are the different types of devices used in microneedling.

Back To TOC

Types Of Devices Used For Microneedling

Types Of Devices Used For Microneedling

Shutterstock

Dermarollers are the devices used to perform microneedling. A variety of these rollers are available in the market. However, all these dermarollers are adopted from five basic types of rollers approved by the FDA. These are:

  • The C-8 or Cosmetic Type Dermaroller

The needle length of this dermaroller is 0.13 mm. These are commonly available in the market and can be used for at-home microneedling treatment. These needles are painless.

  • The C-8HE or Cosmetic Type For Hair Bearing Surfaces

The length of the needles on this device is 0.2 mm, and it is mostly used on the scalp. These needles are also painless.

  • CIT- 8 or Collagen Induction Therapy

This is a professional or medical-type dermaroller that has a needle length of 0.5mm. This device is used for collagen synthesis and skin remodeling.

  • MF-8

The needle size of this device is 1.5 mm, and it is used for creating microchannels in the deeper layers of your skin. It is used for treating scars.

  • MS-4

Compared to all the other dermarollers, this one has a small cylinder covered in 96 needles of 1.5 mm. This device is used for areas that demand precision and deeper penetration.

Apart from these basic types, the most common types of dermarollers available on the market include:

  • Dermapen: This looks like a small pen and has a small circular head covered in needles.
  • Dermastamp: This looks similar to a dermapen, but it has a large head holding more needles. It needs to be stamped on the face.
  • LED Microneedling Device: This device has needles along with an LED light and is used for treating scarring and wrinkles (6).

Although microneedling is strictly a professional procedure, microneedling devices have become readily available in the past few years. A lot of women are trying out microneedling at home. Professionals and dermatologists usually do not approve of such DIY measures because you can end up injuring your skin. There are many risks associated with it that you need to be aware of. Just keep reading to find out more.

Microneedling At Home: What Are The Risks?

Microneedling At Home What Are The Risks

Shutterstock

DIY microneedling at home is undoubtedly less expensive, but it comes with its set of risks.

  • At-home microneedling devices do not offer uniform application. Therefore, they can cause deeper wounds and flare up your acne breakouts. Usually, at-home microneedling devices have needles that are 0.2 mm to 1 mm in length. These can give you open wounds and can be quite painful.
  • At-home devices are not as sterile as professional devices. Thus, they can increase your chances of contracting herpes infection. If you already suffer from skin conditions such as rosacea and psoriasis, self-microneedling can worsen them.
  • Holding that device and rolling it on your skin requires a unique technique that professionals are trained to perform. Even if you think that you are doing it right, chances are that you are actually damaging your skin. The needles need to be pushed in at the correct angle and at a specific depth to prevent irritation and damage to your skin.
  • People who do DIY-microneedling are more at risk of developing skin issues because they may not be following the correct aftercare steps. Not taking care of your skin after microneedling may cause major skin issues in the long run.

Yes, there will be a teeny-weeny bit of pain and blood. And yes, it takes a lot of courage to let those needles prick your skin. But, as Renoir said, “The pain passes, but the beauty remains.” The smooth and healthy skin that you get after microneedling treatment is worth it. However, don’t forget to consult an expert or a dermatologist before getting it done. Good luck!

Cleaning up is the worst part about the best part of getting ready – makeup. But wait, here’s something we all need – micellar water. A new entrant in the ‘makeup removal’ category, this product has changed everything we knew about makeup removing and cleansing, and thank God for it.

Wet wipes, cleansing wipes, water-based cleansers, oil-based lotions, baby oil – these are the things we’ve made do with for a while now. Every girl in the world has probably tried all of these, trying to find something that removes makeup effectively while still being mess-free, fuss-free, and easy on the skin. The struggle is real, and we couldn’t have been more thankful for this.

But what is micellar water? How do we use it? Why should we even use it? Hang on, all of your questions will be answered right here, so you can make an informed decision. Let’s take it from the top.

Table Of Contents

What Is Micellar Water?

What Is Micellar Water

Shutterstock

Micellar water is a liquid cleanser that contains tiny micelle molecules that are readily soluble in water and attract oil. This means oil, makeup, dirt, and grime get attached to it easily in just a few swipes. It contains water, a little glycerin, and a mild concentration of surfactants that help remove dirt. You don’t need to wash your after using micellar water as it gets fully absorbed into your skin and acts as a toner.

But here’s the biggest question – is it actually good for your skin? Read on to find out.

Is Micellar Water Good For Your Skin?

Is Micellar Water Good For Your Skin

Shutterstock

Micellar water is mild, non-alcoholic, and oil- and chemical-free. It does not contain any heavy duty soaps or cleansing agents that strip off your skin’s natural oils, dry it out, or cause breakouts. It is gentle on the skin and does not cause any damage.

On the flip side, since it does not contain fancy ingredients, it might not remove all traces of makeup. Thus, you may need to follow it up with a face wash, cleanser, or toner.

So, you must be thinking why use it in the first place? Well, there are plenty of reasons why you should use micellar water. Check them out!

Back To TOC

Why Should You Use Micellar Water?

  • It does not need to be rinsed off, unlike most cleansers that leave behind an oily and greasy layer at the top of your skin.
  • It does not contain any chemicals that can irritate your eyes, cause redness, or make your eyes water. The water and glycerine formula is perfect for sensitive skin too.
  • It is not an abrasive or an exfoliant and does not contain alcohol that dries your skin out or causes inflammation. It is gentle on your skin.
  • It removes makeup in just a few swipes and without creating a mess. It saves times and does not to be used over a sink. You can use it in bed and go straight to sleep.

Quite amazing that one product can totally transform your skin care routine, isn’t it? Let’s see how you can start using micellar water on a regular basis.

How To Use Micellar Water In Your Skin Care Routine

1. As A Cleanser In The Morning

1. As A Cleanser In The Morning

Shutterstock

Skin experts say that you need a full cycle of double cleansing twice a day. Once in the morning, and once at the end of the day to remove makeup. But, let’s face it – you probably think it is too laborious to follow a strict routine like that. Here’s where micellar water comes to your rescue. It gets absorbed into your skin and cleanses it quickly. If you use any serums, packs, or lotions as part of your nighttime routine, clean them up with micellar water the next morning before washing your face.

2. Use It for Toning Your Skin

2. Use It for Toning Your Skin

If you think you need a much stronger makeup remover, use one of your choice and follow it up with micellar water. Micellar water acts as a toner while removing the last traces of makeup.

3. Makeup Remover

3. Makeup Remover

Shutterstock

Use micellar water for its intended purpose – as a makeup remover. Soak a cotton pad in this liquid and wipe your makeup off. If you have heavy makeup on, do this a couple of times. It is the safest and most harmless way to remove your makeup.

4. Refresh Or Touch Up

If you feel like there’s too much makeup on your face or your skin starts feeling heavy in the middle of a hot day, micellar water comes in very handy. Dip a cotton pad or soft cloth in micellar water and dab it around your T-zone or oily zones. It refreshes you instantly and keeps your skin hydrated.

5. Clean Your Makeup Brushes

5. Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Shutterstock

You know how you never have the time or always find an excuse for not cleaning your makeup brushes? We totally get it. Micellar water is the easiest, cheapest, and most fuss-free way to clean your brushes. Soak your brushes in a bowl of micellar water for a few minutes. Dry them with a paper towel or a soft cloth. You are sorted!

6. Cleansing Post Workout

6. Cleansing Post Workout

Shutterstock

Most of us don’t wear makeup when working out and, thus, assume that washing our face directly with a cleanser or a face wash is a great idea. The truth is, a whole lot of sweat settles on the top of your skin and attracts dust. This can clog your pores. Just use micellar water to cleanse your face quickly after working out.

7. Hand Sanitizer

7. Hand Sanitizer

Shutterstock

It may sound like a crazy idea, but micellar water can be used as a hand sanitizer when you are in a pinch.

Though micellar water has been around for a long time, it has gotten popular only in the last few years. Have you jumped on this bandwagon yet? How do you feel about it? Let us know by dropping in a text in the comments section below.

21 Best Organic, Mineral, And Natural Sunscreens Of 2018

What is an organic, mineral, and natural sunscreen? Was it the first question that popped in your mind right after reading the title? Simply put, this type of sunscreen doesn’t contain any chemicals. It is extremely gentle on your skin and is eco-safe. Sounds interesting, right? Scroll down to find out more about natural sunscreens and a list of the best natural, organic, and mineral sunscreens you can lay your hands on.

What Is A Natural, Organic, And Mineral Sunscreen? What Makes It Natural?

Sunscreens are of two types:

  • Chemical Sunscreens: This is a no-brainer. These sunscreens contain chemicals, especially oxybenzone, as their key ingredients. These chemicals let your skin absorb the UV rays. Chemicals sunscreens need 20 minutes to become effective as they need time to get absorbed into your skin.
  • Natural Sunscreens: Also referred to as mineral-based or organic sunscreens, these contain minerals, such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which reflect UV rays. These sunscreens have an immediate effect (you can apply and walk out into the sun immediately) as the minerals will not get absorbed into your skin. This is why these sunscreens are considered gentle and safe.

Both protect your skin – but in different ways. If you prefer the natural way, here’s the list of natural sunscreens that you cannot miss.

All these mineral sunscreens are mild and do not irritate hypersensitive skin. However, many people complain of a whitish layer on the skin after applying mineral sunscreens. To avoid that, take your time and massage the product thoroughly and well before you put on your makeup. Keep in mind that the minerals sit on your skin surface and do not get absorbed. So, you need to apply the sunscreen properly.

Are you a fan of natural sunscreens? Which one is your favorite? Leave your feedback in the comments section below.

My Journey On How I Decided To Start Taking Care Of Myself

$

When I began to write this article, I started to write this like any other article that I ever wrote—do some research, pick up the right keywords so that it performs better. But after writing a 200 plus intro I decided to scrap whatever I’d written by hitting the Ctrl+A and backspace buttons. I wanted to write it with all my heart and why would I do it? Well, I’ve had my journey too, the journey of how I decided to stop hurting myself and start taking care of myself. And if you’d known me a year ago, you wouldn’t recognize the person that I’ve become now. Back then I didn’t know that my magic was in the words that I penned down. Back then I was completely a clueless nomad.

When I Realised My Problem

When I Realised My Problem

Shutterstock

I’ve faced issues everywhere and with everyone that I’ve encountered in my life. I never understood the notion of “your vibe attracts your tribe” at all. I didn’t understand what I was facing—anxiety or depression? I used to feel empty and powerless. And I’d criticise myself and overthink the consequences of every decision that I ever took in my life. And guess who helped me realize that I was battling both—a random stranger!

His name was Rohit. I was participating in a literature fest at a prestigious college in my city. I came up with a short poem about a wildflower. It spoke about a lot of emotions on a symbolic level. Rohit asked me if it was a way for me to express the deepest and the darkest parts of my soul. In my head, I screamed yes, but to him, I just said, “No dude!”

And that was my moment of realization. My subconscious mind had led me to write a series of things I was battling a lot of things—I was depressed for no reason, and always anxious for reasons unknown. I was facing mental health issues (1).

How I Took Care Of Myself From Then On

How I Took Care Of Myself From Then On

Shutterstock

It’s not easy, we know. It’s a way of rediscovering yourself. For some, it’s the time wherein they try and understand the purpose of their life. Buddha once said, “If your compassion doesn’t include yourself, it is incomplete”. Therefore, I took it upon myself to heal myself. All I needed to do was only love and care for myself first. And it wasn’t easy. I tried everything under the sun. I’ve listed a few down for you guys to read:

1. Taking Control Of My Life

Taking Control Of My Life

Shutterstock

I decided to take responsibility for all my actions. I realized that all this while I had restricted myself to my cocoon where I let the society dictate my life. I decided to stop! And I took all my matters to task on my own. I listed down my problems and began to work on them (2).

2. Reading Self-Help Books

Reading Self-Help Books

Shutterstock

I must admit that buying one wasn’t easy at all. I remember placing and cancelling my order for such a book at least 5-6 times. But then, when I finally bought one, I was hooked! Reading such books helped me transform my life, encouraged me to get my act together ASAP (3).

3. Taking Care Of My Body

Taking Care Of My Body

Shutterstock

I’m an emotional foodie. I gorge on junk and crave for sinful desserts as my mood swings start. This was harming my body; it made me less active and more lethargic. What we eat affects our brain structure which in turn affects our mood (4). So, the first step I took was to eat healthily and love my body by exercising right. I noticed the positive change in my behavior once I made some healthy lifestyle changes.

4. Removing Negativity From My Life (Read: Negative People)

Removing Negativity From My Life (Read Negative People)

Shutterstock

It was tough for me to do such a thing initially. But it had an incredibly positive impact on my mind. It’s very true when they say that we start mirroring the people we hang out with. It’s exactly why we should choose our friends wisely. If you ever find yourself handling drama or any sort of mental stress that isn’t really your business, shut them off (5). Unfollow them on social media as well. Keep your life simple! Keep negativity away.

5. Re-Discovering Myself

Re-Discovering Myself

Shutterstock

Oftentimes, when we lack confidence, we end up replicating others’ personalities. I admit that I tried to be a duplicate of others in those days. But, little did I know that this was inching me further towards self-doubt. Discovering who you are, finding your purpose in life, all these aren’t a day’s work. Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all. You need to look out for signs, just like how I did. I found my happiness in writing and photography. I figured I was myself while doing it. Do what your heart desired, and rediscover your true self just as I did.

We all have just one life. It is beautiful; all it takes is a teeny-weeny bit of effort to love ourselves and spread our aura as far as we could. Remember, “Good vibes only” peeps!

8 Probiotics That Can Boost Your Health (Spoiler: Yogurt Isn’t The Only Source)

Trivia time: Name two probiotics other than yogurt.

If you had to think hard and you’re still unable to conjure up images of other probiotics, this post is for you. The word “probiotic” stands for promotion (pro) of life (biotic). Like it or not, we have a lot of tiny organisms living inside us. These organisms, also known as microorganisms are so many in number that they outnumber the human cells in our body. (Well, looks like we have been providing shelter to many tiny fellows inside us.) And probiotics are one such important bacteria that is good for us. Bacteria are infamous for causing diseases, but these probiotics are essential for our body to carry out the gastrointestinal functions smoothly.

What Do Probiotics Do?

What Do Probiotics Do

Shutterstock

Probiotics can be a magic wand for a lot of health issues— like warding off infections, improving the immune system, fighting obesity, or even improving women’s health (1). Research has found that probiotics can effectively treat common gastrointestinal problems, namely antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD). There are multiple types of probiotics that are found in fermented foods (2). They have also earned themselves a great reputation in fighting against constipation. In some cases, probiotic therapy is prescribed to effectively treat Crohn’s disease, urinary tract infections, irritable bowel syndrome, bladder concerns, vaginal infections, ulcers, issues related to the colon, and eczema in children (3). One cannot underestimate the power of these critters, after all, can we?

However, if you have restricted yourself to plain or flavored yogurt for your daily dose of probiotics, then it’s time you look around for more options. You will be surprised to know that there are so many. Here’s a list to get you started on the probiotic feast:

1. Dark Chocolate

Dark Chocolate

Shutterstock

You didn’t know that, did you? (If you did, pat yourself on the back) This variant of chocolate has some sweet health benefits. In addition to being a rich source of antioxidants and fiber, it’s also a great probiotic in itself. When you eat dark chocolate, the good bacteria in the gut eat it and feed on them, so they grow. And eventually, they produce anti-inflammatory compounds (4). Maybe you can dip some fruit in dark chocolate to reap the benefits of both.

2. Fermented Cheese

Fermented Cheese

Shutterstock

All the cheese lovers in the house put your hands up in the air. Although cheese is a fermented product, not all types of cheese contain probiotics. The key is to check the labels for live cultures in the cheese. The types of cheese with rich probiotic content are cheddar, mozzarella, gouda, Swiss, and cottage cheese. According to the Journal of Applied Microbiology, the good bacteria in these cheeses actually survive the manufacturing and aging process (5).

3. Kombucha

Kombucha

Shutterstock

How about a tea packed with probiotics? Kombucha is a fermented tea that is loaded with good bacterium (6). It is either a black or green tea that is often referred to as mushroom tea. It is packed with a lot of health benefits, predominantly those that ensure a proper functioning of the digestive and immune systems, reduce inflammation, and help in weight loss (7). Kombucha is a powerhouse of good bacteria like Saccharomyces and Gluconacetobacter xylinus.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar

Shutterstock

This one is a little tricky. Since apple cider vinegar has a wide range of uses, it is usually found in every household. So it’s easy to get your hands on this probiotic-rich drink. And no brownie points for guessing what this vinegar is made of. The apple components are great for the gut bacteria (8). But, one shouldn’t consume this directly, and instead, opt to dilute it with water or add it to food.

5. Pickles

Pickles

Shutterstock

Pickles are low in calories, high in sodium and potassium and great to munch on for some good health. Pickled cucumbers are great for the gut health. But, be sure to choose sour pickles and not the ones that are doused with vinegar (9). A solution made of sea salt and water is a great atmosphere for the good bacteria to grow.

6. Kefir

Kefir

Shutterstock

It is a probiotic milk-drink that is made by adding kefir grains to milk. It is all the rage in the world of health. It tastes great when added to milkshakes and smoothies and is delicious for ingesting some probiotics (10).

7. Miso

Miso

Shutterstock

Since we are on a mission to find probiotics, let’s look at the Japanese cuisine for some fermented source of cancer fighting-probiotics (11). Miso is a seasoning used in most Japanese dishes. It is high in protein, fiber, vitamins, and probiotics. So the next time you visit a restaurant for sushi, get yourself a bowl of miso soup to keep cerebral and myocardial infarctions at bay (12).

The next time you find yourself staring at a box of yogurt, steer yourself in the direction of unpasteurized foods like kefir, sauerkraut, etc. You can up the probiotic count in your diet and stay fit (also you will not get bored of eating the same old yogurt all day).

5 Home Remedies For Skin Fungus That Actually Work

$

Fungal infections of the skin are really irritating, embarrassing, and can turn you into an itch-box who can’t keep their hands from constantly scratching. We have all been at the receiving end of a fungal infection at some point in life—ringworms, rashes, jock itch, oozing sores, or inflammation. They are all a result of an underlying fungal growth. Often, dark and damp environments become the breeding ground for fungi, giving rise to infections (1). While a number of medicines and creams are available to treat these infections, it’s always good to know a few at-home remedies for mild to moderate fungal infections. You’ll thank us when you find yourself stuck at an island with huge ringworm and no pharmacy to your rescue for thousands of nautical miles.

What Causes Skin Fungus?

What Causes Skin Fungus

Shutterstock

Before arriving at a solution, it is always important to know the root cause of the problem. Skin fungus is often caused when hygiene isn’t maintained. For instance, the gym buffs, or those who sweat it out every day may be prone to an athlete’s foot because of unclean socks and shoes (2). If you wear sweaty clothes and shoes on a daily basis, you are inviting the fungus to build itself a home on your skin. In some cases, the microscopic fungi that live in the dead tissues of the skin, hair, and toenails also cause fungal infections. Additionally, you should also be on a high alert if you’re on steroids, or have a weak immune system because of HIV/AIDS, or cancer, or if you have hypertension and diabetes (3).

Whatever the cause of the skin fungus may be, we have listed down some beneficial home remedies to treat them. That being said, now don’t throw caution to the wind. Irrespective of how tried and tested these remedies are, you should always consult a doctor before you proceed.

1. Turmeric

1. Turmeric

Shutterstock

Turmeric is a well-known spice that is used in Indian households. A little turmeric is all you need to make the skin fungus do a turntable and vanish into thin air (well it’s contagious and is a communicable condition, so be careful). Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties can reduce inflammation, itching, redness, and also treat mild infections. Turmeric has a component called curcumin which has antimicrobial properties (4). You can either use it in tea or meal preparations, or you could mix it with coconut oil and apply it on the affected area. However, the yellowish tint will remain until a couple of washes

2. Coconut Oil

2. Coconut Oil

Shutterstock

Coconut oil is great for digestion as it helps in the absorption of food. It helps in absorbing all the essential minerals, nutrients, vitamins, and amino acids. If that’s not enough, this humble essential oil is also rich in saturated fatty acids (caprylic acids). These fatty acids strengthen the immune system by dissolving in the cellular wall of the fungi and thus prevent them from growing and breeding further (5). So, if you have a minor rash or infections (usually, down there) try smearing some coconut oil before you press the panic button (6).

3. Oregano Oil

3. Oregano Oil

Shutterstock

Prevention is always better than cure. And if you have some knowledge about essential oils and how to use them, you are sorted. You can prevent skin fungus like a pro (7), (8). You can just rub some oregano oil or garlic oil (based on how much you can tolerate the smell of both the oils) on your feet (between the toes) or the areas where there is too much sweating frequently. This will act like a suraksha-kavach against the fungal growth.

4. Garlic

4. Garlic

Shutterstock

Garlic is loaded with antimicrobial properties (9). And the most essential component in the antimicrobial properties is a compound called allicin. This compound actively destroys viruses, bacteria, and a whole lot of fungal infections. Just like how garlic is held to shoo away vampires in literary fiction, garlic plays the role of an actual weapon in reality when it comes to dealing with infections. You can either use it topically or make it a part of your diet. Either way, garlic can help you combat deadly fungal infections.

5. Tea Tree Oil

5. Tea Tree Oil

Shutterstock

We’re all fans of tea tree oil, aren’t we? A brilliant oil that can treat acne and a natural antiseptic that we are bestowed with (10). It can cure fungal infections just with a simple application over the affected area. There are multiple ointments available over the counter, or you could just use the oil as it is. Ensure that the skin is clean and clear of any dirt or foreign particles before you apply the oil.

A simple rash, or a yeast infection, skin infections can be ruthless, so much that, they are coined as the next big killer that causes more deaths than malaria and tuberculosis (11). So, don’t underestimate the power of these tiny microbes, they can do more than you can imagine. Keep these home remedies in your mind, the next time you are attacked by a fungal infection and thank us later.

Here’s Why You Should Stop Using Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly) On Your Skin

$

How many of us here consider Vaseline aka petroleum jelly as our everyday elixir for our skin? We use it for almost everything. Right from moisturizing our hands and legs to smoothening chapped lips, petroleum jelly finds a wide range of uses. We know there are a zillion uses of Vaseline, but there are also some serious red flags that signal us to stop using it on our skin.

When we found out, we were startled too. So we did two things. One was to jot down why Vaseline is bad for our skin; two, we also came up with some alternatives for us to use instead of the petroleum jelly. Read on to know more.

What Exactly Is Petroleum Jelly?

What Exactly Is Petroleum Jelly

Shutterstock

It is a by-product obtained in the oil refining process (Yep! You read that right). Therefore, it is neither Eco-friendly nor is it sustainable. The petroleum jelly is generally found in the bottom-most part of an oil rig. This unscented byproduct is further refined to be used in beauty products like Vaseline. If you take a close look at the ingredients on its packaging, you will see that it does contain harmful components like hydrocarbons (1).

How Does Petroleum Jelly Work On Our Skin?

How Does Petroleum Jelly Work On Our Skin

Shutterstock

It is a quotidian ingredient in almost all beauty products, especially the moisturizers. In the market, it is widely available and people resort to using it as it is the cheapest on the rack out there. It has other names too—petrolatum, mineral oil, paraffin oil or liquid paraffin. People use it because it makes your skin soft, supple and basically holds in the moisture of the skin.

Of course, we need to make sure our skin is moisturized and nourished. But locking the moisture with a product that has petroleum jelly can be a bad thing. Because this ingredient is waterproof and not water soluble. It sure does create a protective layer over your skin, but this only means that it’s preventing your skin from sweating or breathing. (This doesn’t really sound right!) It is like trapping our skin. Furthermore, it could also block our skin’s pores and can lock in dirt or bacteria. And that’s the last thing you ever want for your skin (2).

It surely does what you expect it to do (moisturizes your skin) but without any health benefits.

Why You Shouldn’t Be Using Petroleum Jelly On Your Skin

via GIPHY

  1. It Contaminates The Body: Our body cannot metabolize petroleum jelly. Especially when we apply petroleum jelly over a wound or a cut on our skin, it can delay the healing process of the wound (3).
  2. It Affects The Estrogen Levels: There are substances in petroleum jelly that can cause an increase in the estrogen levels of the body. Studies have shown that there are hydrocarbons that affect the endocrine system, too (4).
  3. Causes Yeast Infections: Petroleum jelly seals your skin and blocks moisture, it creates a warm atmosphere perfect enough for the yeast and fungal infection to develop (5).
  4. It Has Carcinogenic Substances: These are known to cause cancer. And sadly petroleum-based products might have such substance (6). Whether Vaseline causes cancer or not is still a hot debate in the works. But, better to be cautious than to be sorry, right?

Some Natural Alternatives To Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline)

  • Shea Butter:
Shea Butter

Shutterstock

This butter is acquired from the Shea tree. It’s rich in vitamin E and A which promote the growth of healthy skin (7).

  • Coconut Oil:
Coconut Oil

Shutterstock

Virgin coconut oil does wonders to dry skin. It moisturizes the skin, improves the collagen and also acts as a moderate analgesic (discomfort reliever) (8).

  • Almond Oil:
Almond Oil

Shutterstock

Rich in vitamin E, this oil is known to heal dry skin and eczema. In fact, it can be used to treat wrinkles around the eyes as well (9).

  • Jojoba Oil:
Jojoba Oil

Shutterstock

Two things are great when it comes to using this oil as a moisturizer. It hydrates your skin and it prevents excess accumulation of oil on the skin. Also, its anti-inflammatory properties can fix damaged skin (10). And it’s hypoallergenic (suitable for all skin types).

  • Avocado Oil:
Avocado Oil

Shutterstock

The high levels of oleic acid in avocados boast of a variety of skin benefits. Apart from just moisturizing the skin, it can also be used to treat chronic skin conditions (11).

Petroleum Jelly: Yay Or Nay?

via GIPHY

While quite a number of dermatologists advise Vaseline or any other petroleum jelly based products, there is an even greater number of researches and studies that advise other alternatives for the skin. And, when a significant number of doubts have been raised with respect to petroleum jelly’s adverse effects on our skin, why take a plunge in the Dead Sea in search of the pearls, right? When we have natural alternatives, let’s resort to them instead.

Cons

Review

This Hourglass foundation comes with a built-in primer in its formula. It is extremely lightweight and high coverage, so a little goes a long way. This foundation is wonderful for aging skin as it does not accentuate fine lines, wrinkles, and large pores. Instead, it softly blurs out all imperfections. If you’re into full coverage makeup, you will love this product. However, the shade range is limited, so it’s a little tricky to find the right shade for you.

6 Feng Shui To Invite Love, Prosperity, And Happiness Into Your Home

Have you been feeling tired, uneasy, and stressed lately? We have all been there, faced that. But, let’s pause and think if the environment and the surroundings around us could have an impact on our lives— relationships, health, finances, and career. Well, the ancient Chinese believed that the surroundings could impact our lives vastly. They believed in an art and science called Feng Shui. Literally, the words Feng Shui translates to wind and water.

In a nutshell, Feng Shui can be defined as an art of placement. It’s all about understanding how the placement of the objects within a space around you can influence your life. If your life has been on a downhill for a while and nothing seems to be working, you can always adopt the techniques of Feng Shui. It isn’t a religion or a fad. It’s a complex body of knowledge that presents to us the balance and harmony between the energies in a given space—kitchen, garden, office, or home. Although it’s looked at as a pseudo-science, Feng Shui clearly impacts the architecture and the interiors of a space, and this art has earned itself a notable spot among the eastern and western cultures alike.

So, if you want to add a touch of Feng Shui to the aesthetics of your living space, read on. By the way, even if you’re skeptical about Feng Shui’s ability to invite love, prosperity, and happiness into your homes, you’ll be definitely making your space aesthetically beautiful. It’s a win-win. Here are 6 Feng Shui tips to keep the negative energies at bay and give yourself a lift in life:

1. Say Hello With Feng Shui At The Doorway

1. Say Hello With Feng Shui At The Doorway

Shutterstock

You definitely wouldn’t want to be welcomed by a pile of garbage, or a broken door, or a messed up doorway when you get home, right? It really spoils the mood. Depending on what you see at the entrance, you can either become an angryMogamboor a jubilant Happy Singh. Opt for some pleasant things like a water fountain or a soothing painting at the entrance, it can keep negative energy away.

2. Let There Be Light And Air

2. Let There Be Light And Air

According to Feng Shui, for positive energy to thrive in your homes, it should have ample natural light and fresh air. Instead of keeping your homes dark and dingy, make it a point to ensure that there is enough brightness and ventilation. In case you don’t have the convenience to keep the indoor space airy and bright, you can always opt for air purifiers, full-spectrum lights, etc.

3. Clutter-Free Zones For A Clutter-Free Life

3. Clutter-Free Zones For A Clutter-Free Life

A whole of clutter at home or your workplace can act as a magnet for the negative energy. Broken, damaged things should be thrown away or repaired. The trash should be where it belongs (just in case there’s a doubt: the dustbin). And all the other things need to be organized and arranged properly. That’s the only way we can invite positive energies into our homes. Maybe we should listen to our moms and clean our rooms, no?

4. Let Positive Vibes Chime Into Your Homes

Just like when the good times are rolling, you go ahead and announce it to the world, the wind chimes announce the arrival of good times into your homes. Hang them at the doorway to bring peace and prosperity into your lives.

5. It’s All About The Placement

5. It’s All About The Placement

Have you ever walked into someone else’s room and wished to change how certain things were placed in the room? Yes, placement of furniture, accessories, lights, decor, etc, matter. For instance, Feng Shui principles restrict you from placing your bed opposite the mirror (it’s creepy to watch yourself sleep, right?). In the kitchen, your sink and the stove need to be in the same line and not on opposite sides. Always ensure that the sofa in the living room is in direction of the main door. Another way of pushing out negative energy is by showing it the mirror, hang a mirror facing the main door.

6. Accessorize Your Space

6. Accessorize Your Space

Just like we compliment our outfit with accessories, our living spaces demand a little bit of accessorizing too. There are some unique and interesting accessories that you can use to keep positivity in your house. The three-legged toad is a Feng Shui charm to welcome wealth, prosperity, and success. Place this at the main door. You’ll see how positively it will influence your savings and earnings. If you are too bothered about positive energy being a temporary guest, by sounding a Tibetan bell occasionally, you can make sure that positivity never leaves your side.

Feng Shui believes in attracting the positive Chi energy and ensuring its presence around us at all times to bring happiness, prosperity, and success. So, if you think you could use some of these positive vibes in your life, go ahead and follow the steps of Feng Shui.

Tell us how making subtle changes to the aesthetics of your living spaces has made a difference in your life.

Why Women Don’t Get Out Of Unhealthy Relationships (Real Stories)

Have you ever been in an abusive relationship before? Or do you know anyone who has been in one? When we hear about someone in an abusive or an unhealthy relationship, our first question is always this—“Why don’t you break it off? Why are you staying?” And if you’re someone who has never been in such a relationship (*touch wood*), I’d never want you to be in one ever. It always seems easy to throw up the deuces and move on with your life. But here’s what I’m trying to convey in this very wordy article—it’s never that easy to “just leave”. Trust me!

Saying “NO” to an abusive relationship and getting out of it can be hard for many reasons. So here’s what I did: I spoke to a couple of women who had unfortunately been through hardships in their relationship. They spoke about how they still chose to cling on to it for a while when they could have said a “NO” and chosen a better life for themselves. And that’s how I understood why they chose to stay; I’ve put down a few real stories from real women, on why they chose to stay in unhealthy relationships. Let’s read together.

1. “I Stayed Because I Didn’t Want To Be Seen As A Failure”

1. “I Stayed Because I Didn’t Want To Be Seen As A Failure”

Shutterstock

Here’s what Sneha, whose goal in life was to always be an obedient daughter to her parents, and now an obedient wife to her husband, told me:

“I thrive on making my people proud. It’s like an accomplishment for me. I thought that if I worked harder to keep him satisfied, forgave him a little more, it would all work out in the end. You know, just like how the rest of the things in my life have worked out ever since I was a kid. But, it took me a while to realize that I was continuing to fail in a phase of my life which was never really meant to be successful.”

Do I even have to explain anything here? She wanted to stay because she believed that it would work out anyway. She lived for her parents’ happiness and continued the same pattern, even after her marriage, by living for her husband. But, oh dear women! Don’t we have a life of our own? If there are any of you who are answering a “no,” please carve a purpose in life for yourself. A purpose that doesn’t fade because of any relationship or any other human.

2. “I Stayed Because I Was Supposed To”

2. “I Stayed Because I Was Supposed To”

Shutterstock

Here’s what Anjali, a beautiful mother of two, tried to explain to me.

“I had to stay back with my husband because of my two children. I thought they’d miss a father’s love, support, and care. Yes, he used to abuse me, especially more when he came home drunk. But, I took it all for my children. One fine day, I chose to leave, finally! If you want to know why, again, the answer is my children. I realized that by staying with him I was teaching my children, my sons to disrespect women.”

I was so proud of Anjali’s decision. Although she didn’t do it for her, she did it for her world, her children. Nothing can beat the pain or the suffering that a mother willingly goes through for her children. Nor can anyone dare to fight a mother who stands up for her children’s well-being.

3. “I Stayed Because I Was Afraid”

3. “I Stayed Because I Was Afraid”

Shutterstock

This is what Rani, a 22-year-old, bubbly girl turning into a stronger, independent woman told me:

“The main reason why I wanted to stay back was that I was afraid. Afraid of the future, of being left alone and I thought I’d never find anyone else. I stayed because he made me feel like I wasn’t worthy of being anyone’s partner. He made it seem like he was doing me a favor by putting up with me. A part of me wanted to break free, whereas, another part of me only spoke of self-doubt. Because of him, I’d convinced myself that this was what I deserved. This was the best that life could give me. But then things changed when he went to the USA to do his masters and I was in India alone. That’s when I began to socialize and soon realized how wrong I used to think about myself.”

“I broke up with him. I fell in love again, with an amazing man who loves me more than I had ever loved myself. We even plan on getting married soon.”

It’s extremely important to nurture the self-confidence in you, and it is even more crucial to love yourself first before you love anyone else. Thank God that Rani soon understood that she was an amazing person and she didn’t need anyone to prove that to her.

So, these were some stories that I thought were important to share with you all. We can never really understand what’s going on in the other person’s life, but we can always try to understand why they chose to make the decisions that they have made. A lot of reasons like children, the fear of ending up alone, the society, financial security, etc, make it difficult for most women out there to get out of unhealthy, unhappy, and abusive relationships.

Have you ever been through such a phase in life? What do you suggest that a woman should do at that time? Do let us know in the comments below.

Types Of Body Fat And Ways To Get Rid Of It Without Stressing

From Sonam Kapoor to Sonakshi Sinha, there are numerous celebrities who have gone through rigorous workouts and diets to get a fat-free and drool-worthy physique. But, here’s a question: Do they all follow the same exercise pattern? Why not? It’s simple—the body fat in each person’s body differs. You may have a pear-shaped body with a heavy lower body, while your friend might have an athletic body but with a whole lot of back fat. There are different types of body fat, but it’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all logic. So, we have done some homework and listed out the different types of fat and the ways you can melt it away.

1. Lower Abdomen Fat

1. Lower Abdomen Fat

Shutterstock

If you haven’t been filling your stomach till it feels like it’s going to explode and you still have generous amounts of fat happily residing in your lower abdomen, something’s wrong. Lower abdomen fat is usually a result of depression, anxiety or stress (1). This is often found in women, but these days men and women alike are prone to causative factors. Due to stress, we indulge in unhealthy habits, and this leads to unhealthy eating, too. And the stress hormone— cortisol has a role to play here (2).

How To Tackle This?

Try meditatingor enroll yourself in yoga classes to calm yourself down. Additionally, start eating clean.

2. Upper Body Fat

2. Upper Body Fat

Shutterstock

On a daily average, we are supposed to consume a limited number of calories, (the upper limit is around 2800 for men and 2000 for women) based on age, lifestyle, physical activity, etc. (3). If you aren’t burning even half the calories of what you are consuming, then there’s obviously more food stocked in the body than needed. And that’s how you build your upper body fat. The body keeps piling this on and that’s how you put on weight. Keep your calorie consumption proportionate to your physical activity.

How To Tackle This?

Include at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercises like walking or swimming in your routine. Stay away from sugar, and you will see the change for yourself (4).

3. Lower Body Fat

3. Lower Body Fat

Shutterstock

No matter how smoothly your upper body glides into that pretty dress that you picked up at the mall, those thunder thighs are sure to steal the thunder— by not allowing the dress to fit. Those heavy thighs are troublesome. They can cause rashes on your inner thighs, can give you knee pain, and can reduce your flexibility in many ways. The reason for a heavier lower body is an over-consumption of gluten (5).

How To Tackle This?

While we may not be able to take the stairway to heaven yet, we can alwaystake the stairway to weight loss. Tone up your legs with a lot of climbing. And most importantly, go gluten-free as it is a culprit that increases the fat content in the lower body.

4. A Santa Claus Stomach

4. A Santa Claus Stomach

Shutterstock

We all know the good old beer belly, don’t we? A swollen stomach is usually a cause of regular alcohol consumption (6). So, the next time you get drunk, if you think that your legs have vanished, look closer. Your big belly is covering it up.

How To Tackle This?

Count your shots! Cut back on the alcohol as most of the calories earned by drinking liquor becomes belly fat. Additionally, space out your meals and eat small portions every few hours. This will up your metabolism.

5. Fat In The Legs

5. Fat In The Legs

Shutterstock

Those with leg issues like pain or varicose veins usually have heavy legs. Moreover, if you’re pregnant, you will notice a heavier lower body and fatter legs due to swelling.

How To Tackle This?

Excess fat in the legs can be avoided by keeping the salty foods at an arm’s distance. A sedentary lifestyle is a direct ticket to fat in the lower body (7). So, make it a point to keep moving every 30 minutes. You can also lay down with your feet elevated to prevent the fluid from filling up in your lower legs.

6. Heavy Stomach With Upper Back Fat

6. Heavy Stomach With Upper Back Fat

Shutterstock

By now, we have established the fact that inactivity is like the golden ticket to obesity and fatness, right? So, the same fact is befitting here. Too much sitting, and gorging on processed or junk food can add more kilos to your stomach and upper back.

How To Tackle This?

To keep your stomach tucked in, eat more fiber (8). It helps in digestion and will keep your body functioning to break down the fats.

With age comes the great responsibility of making money (read as peanuts), the stress of handling social lives (if you have one, you’re lucky), and managing our families. If at all there’s any time left, we dedicate it to our bodies. And that’s exactly how we make way for fat. Let’s change the game a little and focus on our bodies. Know your body type, and burn that fat away with these techniques. You can send us a big fat thank you later!

What Do Contractions Feel Like? Everything Women Can Expect

Stepping into pregnancy is like entering a world of emotions—all things exciting, and a whole lot of anxiousness and nervousness (1). We know it’s the best feeling in the world to anticipate the pushing-out of a baby human out of you. But, there’s the one C-word that all the pregnant women are afraid of. And why wouldn’t they be? Contractions can make even the mightiest of a woman fall weak, and you’ll see them screaming with pain.

What Do Contractions Feel Like Everything Women Can Expect

Shutterstock

The adorable little finger clasping your big thumb, and the tiny little shoes waiting for your little angel to step into this world full of surprises is indeed a magical sight. But, all good things take time. And with no pain, there comes no gain (unless you are God’s favorite child). And in this case, there’s a whole lot of pain waiting for you, ladies. Sorry, but there’s no way out of this because contractions are the necessary evil that accompanies a baby’s birth. Since there’s no escaping, let’s educate ourselves and prepare ourselves for the C-day. Here’s what you need to know:

What Are Contractions?

What Are Contractions

Shutterstock

In layman terms, a contraction is the compression of the uterus muscle to make way for the baby through the birth canal (2). Not as simple as it sounds. Let’s paint the picture for you. Imagine you’re on your period cramps. Now, make those a thousand folds worse. Well, that’s what your first contraction is going to feel like. It is the process of dilation of the cervix that allows the tiny tot to take position and gear up for his/her arrival into the world. Contractions could be triggered through external infections or they could be signals that your baby is sending you. Either way, you know that it’s the last leg of the game. There are two kinds of contractions—Braxton Hicks and Labor contractions (3).

Braxton Hicks contractions are basically false contractions or rehearsal contractions. These occur when the uterus is gearing up for birth, but they don’t help in dilating the cervix. (It’s just a false alarm.) According to the American Pregnancy Association, these false alarms can start as early as the second trimester (4). These contractions are basically like stiffening of your stomach, but with no pain. There is no method to this contraction madness and they occur at irregular times. That’s a telltale that it’s not your labor contractions.

Since the Braxton Hicks contractions would have prepped you enough, now it’s time for the end game—the real contractions a.k.a labor contractions (5). These contractions occur at specific time intervals and last for a couple of seconds. You can time these contractions for their consistency. Gradually, the squeezing of the muscles start to quicken up, occur for a longer duration and are excruciatingly painful. If your contractions are anywhere between 5-7 minutes apart, you should head to a Doctor (6). If you’re dreading childbirth already because of the pain, you needn’t worry too much. The good old doctors will give you some epidural (a pain medication that will numb your lower body a tad bit). The epidural is administered through a tube placed in the lower back.

Okay, Tell Me Honestly, How Much Does It Hurt?

Okay, Tell Me Honestly, How Much Does It Hurt

Shutterstock

A Reddit user who had a tough time with her contractions defines them as menstrual cramps that were wrapped around her body like a snake. To deal with the unbearable pain, she had to constantly keep moving and breathing. On the other hand, another mommy-to-be recalls her experience of contractions as a painful one. So much that she couldn’t even speak. The contractions in her case felt like a belt tightened around her belly; so tight that it was painful.

Whether it feels like a higher magnitude of period cramps or like a tightened stomach, the contractions start around the lower back and extend to the hips. Just as the devil becomes stronger before the exorcism, the contractions become stronger and stronger until it finally culminates into a push of the baby.

The Final Call

If you are rejoicing that you have successfully scaled through the labor pains, don’t start the party yet. There are more contractions to come. And this will continue till the placenta is pushed out. Furthermore, the contractions extend till the time you breastfeed. The common factor here is the release of the hormone oxytocin—it is released during the contractions as well as breastfeeding.
Contractions feel like hell, and they even suck the life out of you. But, that’s the nature’s way of helping you from bleeding (postpartum) to death. So, stay strong ladies, because you have a bundle of joy waiting for you.

What Do Contractions Feel Like Everything Women Can Expect

Contractions may sound like a scary thing but all the mothers have been through that phase and they have made it through. Because, on the other side of this pain, there is so much happiness waiting for you. Are you a first-time mommy-to-be? Have you, or your relatives experienced this pain? Shaving Mistakes You Never Knew You Were Making

Planning to wear short skirts or those pretty dresses makes us all grab our shaving kits to remove all the unwanted hair from our legs or hands. Well, it looks so easy, right? Just apply some shaving cream onto your skin, run the razor up your legs, and wash the hair away. Voilà!Say hello to smooth, soft skin!

Shaving mistakes you never knew you were making

Shutterstock

But, unfortunately, it isn’t an easy thing to do especially when you’re in a hurry. As much as we know we need to go slow and steady while doing it, we usually end up haphazardly throwing our leg against the sink in our washroom. We head for the soap instead of the shaving cream and we start shaving at our fastest pace. Of course, we’ve done it quickly and given ourselves an extra three minutes to get our winged eyeliner right, but we’ve also given ourselves cuts, razor burns, ingrown hairs, and probably missed some spots too.

The point here is that shaving is something that needs to be done with utmost care. It’s our skin, after all, the most sensitive part of our body. Taking care of our skin is totally our responsibility and if it doesn’t seem like a big deal to you right now, you will see regret neglecting your skin in the long run (trust us).

So, here’s a list of all those shaving mistakes you think you were never making but should stop right now:

1. Using The Wrong Razors

1. Using The Wrong Razors

Shutterstock

We know that razors are expensive and replacing the blades with every use is another thing to be looked after. And most of us reach out for a guy’s razor in times of emergencies. But, let us tell you that using a guy’s razor is an absolute no-no. Men and women have different kinds of hair, we mean the thickness varies; therefore, even the razors are designed that way (1). Always make sure you have a stock of razors meant for women at home, they aren’t harsh on our skin.

2. Not Using The Shaving Cream Or Gel

2. Not Using The Shaving Cream Or Gel

Shutterstock

There is a reason why shaving cream or gels exist— they protect the skin against any irritation that could be caused while shaving. No matter how intense the emergency gets, do not resort to using soap or go even worse and shave dry. Always keep a shaving gel at home, it will help you shave better and keep your skin smooth. Additionally, shaving creams have ingredients that enable smooth shaving without any razor cuts. If you ever run out of it, consider using coconut oil or olive oil (you could also use it all the time).

3. Not Cleaning Before You Shave

3. Not Cleaning Before You Shave

Shutterstock

Just think about it, you’re going to use a sharp razor on your skin and you will definitely want your skin’s surface to be clean and smooth. The basic first step when you shave has to be to clean your skin with some soap or body wash and prep it up. You could also consider standing under a nice warm shower, wetting the skin will make your hair soft and a warm shower will open up the hair cuticles making it easier for you to glide the razor and shave.

4. Not Following A Post-Shave Routine

4. Not Following A Post-Shave Routine

Shutterstock

What do you all do after shaving your hands and legs? We’re guessing you just wear on your pants along with a matching top and walk out of the door. But here’s what you should be doing according to us—wash your legs off immediately. Then, apply a body lotion or body butter or any suitable body oil onto your skin; it will keep your skin smooth and moisturized and keeps any sort of irritation away.

5. Not Exfoliating

5. Not Exfoliating

Shutterstock

If a post-shave routine exists, then it’s obvious that a pre-shave routine exists too. Exfoliate! Do this every time before you reach out to that razor and start shaving. Exfoliating helps to remove all the dead skin cells and helps the razor to glide through over the skin smoothly (2). It is said that exfoliating also helps to prevent any condition of ingrown hair. Lesser bumps on skin equal smoother shave. So, exfoliate and start rubbing.

6. You’re Pressing Too Hard

6. You’re Pressing Too Hard

Shutterstock

If you’re living under the notion that pressing the razor hard against the skin is going to remove all the hair, you’re wrong, my friend! It’s not going to make the shaving anyprecise. In fact, pressing too hard can lead to a lot of pain as it causes severe razor burns, irritation, bumps and cuts. If you ever feel that you need to press hard to get a clean shave, then, probably its time for you to change the razor blade or the razor itself.

Shaving mistakes you never knew you were making

Now you know how to be careful while shaving. Which of these mistakes have you made? Have we forgotten to mention any? Do let us know in the comments below.

How Wearing Your Hair Up Damages Your Hair

We have all mastered the art of handling other people’s attitudes, but there’s one thing no woman can have control over— the attitude of her hair. The hair misbehaves on a daily basis, and it’s so difficult to control it.

Irrespective of the lengths of our hair, we love wearing our hair down because it makes us look amazing. But again, our hair gets frizzy, gets in our face while we talk or eat, and gives us the ticklish feels when it’s around our neck. And if we try to tie our hair up into a ponytail, a bun, or part it, we notice that a few strands of our hair are falling off. Our hair makes us conscious. Within minutes of letting our hair down, most of us get sentient and we dig into our handbags to find anything with which we can tie our hair up. But, is tying your hair up good for our hair? Does it or doesn’t it damage our hair?Well, we did some research on the cyberspace and it seems to us that yes, tying your hair with a scrunchy or a hair clip can harm your mane. This is because tying it up or any kind of styling stresses our hair (1).

Here are a few ways that you need to understand and follow whenever you think of taming your hair into a bun or a ponytail. It will help you avoid a receding hairline. Read on.

1. Wear It Loose. Always!

1. Wear It Loose. Always!

Shutterstock

If you ever want to wear your hair up, do so in a gentle manner. Don’t wear it up in a tight ponytail or a tight braid. We might think that our hair is behaving when we wear it up so tightly. But, the truth is that our hair is crying with pain (well, almost). When the hair is tied tightly, the nerves on our head experience pain as the hair follicles are intensively pulled together, against their natural fall. This irritates our sensitive scalp. And that’s exactly why we experience a ponytail headache sometimes. It is a type of external compression headache that is caused by the stimulus reactions outside our head (2). Therefore, it’s best to wear your hair in a loose bun (if you have no other way of keeping it out of your face) maybe, or just clip it up.

2. Upgrade Your Ponytails

2. Upgrade Your Ponytails

Shutterstock

Don’t be a metal-head. We are not talking about your choice of music. We are asking you to avoid using rubber bands or any sort of hair ties that have metal elements in it. The hair might cling onto the metal and you’ll have a hard time detangling your hair. It could also break your hair. Instead, opt for gentler hair ties made of fabrics that are safer for your hair. It will not just keep your hair tangle-free but will also leave no creases behind.

3. Don’t Tie Wet Hair Up

3. Don’t Tie Wet Hair Up

Shutterstock

Our hair is at its weakest best when it is wet. Tying up wet hair will damage the scalp. A glistening wet updo surely can look stunning, but hair is at its most fragile state. And using an elastic tie on is like torturing your hair. It also leads to breakage, acute hair loss, and splitting. Make use of a soft towel to drain out the water from your hair and then tie ‘em up. Additionally, the continuous tying of wet hair can make way for fungus to grow as our scalps are very hospitable hosts to friendly microbes and some non-friendly microbes that lead to dandruff and the itchy scalp (3).

4. Oil It Up

4. Oil It Up

Shutterstock

Don’t go all greasy with your hair oil. Just spray an oil serum before you tie your hair up. The advantage here is that it’s easier for your hair to glide through the elastic hair ties. Now that your hair has been nourished with some oil, there are fewer chances for your hair to get tangled. Oiling your hair can never go wrong. It provides deep nourishment to your scalp and hair (4). How oily and greasy you’d want to go before tying your hair up is totally your call.

5. Give Your Hair A Break

5. Give Your Hair A Break

Shutterstock

It’s not just your body; even your hair needs some rest. On days when you could be a couch potato at home resting, just leave your hair alone too. Your scalp deserves a snooze time too. Just let your hair down and let it be free. Free from any chemicals, hairstyling tools, and all those hair-care products that trouble it. Grant your hair the freedom that it truly deserves. It might make you fall in love with its natural texture.

Everybody loves to tie their hair up and experiment with styles to look their best. But, unfortunately, the hair is not as strong as it appears to be. Styling your hair can be bad to an extent that it can damage your hair. Love your hair and it will love you back.

The humble avocado can do a lot more than just pairing up with toast for a healthy breakfast. They are the new apples. From avocado festivals to Instagram hashtags, these buttery fruits have earned themselves a spot of a sought-after fruit. The rise of avocados has led to a £2 billion worth industry in the past decade, and ever since then, it’s only been trending more and more (1). If you haven’t eaten an avocado, it’s probably because you’re allergic to them, or because you just have a habit of being late to the party. Either way, we understand.

From spreading the creamy avocado over a toast, adding it to sandwiches, making a dip out of them, to using them as healthy alternatives to cheese, butter, and mayo, avocados can pretty much keep your tummy full and happy. If that hasn’t intrigued you enough to get your hands on anything to do with an avocado, or the fruit itself, then we will give you more reasons.
