I am a person who loves sarees! I have a collection of sarees. Some are borrowed from my mother, and some are gifted to me by my grandmother. For me, sarees are like legacies that have been handed over from one generation to another. And with every generation, some new elements are woven into the nine-yard saree creating another story.
The saree is a traditional attire of Indian women, especially in the southern region of India. South India is home to the traditional handloom silk weaves, which exist in a wide variety. Every handloom saree has its own story to tell.
While many women of my age (I’m in my twenties) take inspiration from fashion divas and the labels they wear, I’m one of those rare finds among the womenfolk who mirrors the fashion style of women who promote our Indian culture through sarees. And of late, if there is one person whom I’ve been admiring and going gaga over for her saree obsession, it has to be Keerthy Suresh. She is a Tamil beauty who has been making heads turn with her incredible acting and her beauty. Keerthy has repeatedly been spotted at various public events sporting different kinds of sarees. Her saree fashion is traditional, yet it has a modern feel to it. Here’s a peek into Keerthy’s world of sarees-
1. The Eternal Banarasi

All saree lovers will know that their saree collection is incomplete without a Banarasi weave. Keerthy is seen wearing a royal magenta Banarasi saree here. I absolutely love the flower motifs on the saree that depict the flower power which we as women possess. The boat neck blouse with minimal embroidery makes for a perfect match for the heavy saree.
2. The Classic Off-White

Off-white sarees are considered to be a classic as they can make any woman look beautiful and elegant irrespective of her skin tone. This beautiful saree worn by Keerthy has golden buttas and the small pink border adds a peppy touch to an otherwise simple saree. I absolutely love the messy bun and those huge jhumkas that she has teamed her saree with.
3. The Tissue Silk

Tissue silk sarees are extremely lightweight; it almost feels like you’re wearing paper. Love this grey color of the saree which has a metallic shine to it. And the silver mala further accentuates the look of this saree. I’m definitely planning to buy a tissue silk saree after having seen this. It’s like a modern and contemporary version of the heavy silk saree.
4. The Dhoti Bling

Essentially, the saree and the dhoti are the oldest known Indian attire. And when both of these are put together, it makes for an epic fusion wear, right? I absolutely love this dhoti-saree which is just plain fabric. The credit for the oomph factor here goes to the metallic sequinned, shimmery blouse that Keerthy is wearing. Such sarees are perfect wear for a cocktail party or a wedding function when you want to shake a leg and do a jiggy-wiggy, hassle-free.
5. The Dramatic Saree

At times, it’s the way we team up the saree with other elements, that makes us look stunning. Just as in this case, where Keerthy chose to team up her simple silk saree with a ruffle sleeved blouse and some quirky silver metal jewelry. Now, that’s how you drape a silk saree with utmost swag!
6. The Love For Whites

If you consider white gowns to be magical, well, white sarees are no less than that. Keerthy looks like a fairy in this white silk saree which has silver zari and buttas. Even her blouse is white, which has checked buttas on the sleeves. She’s kept her makeup minimal, and those heavy chandbalis with a bare neck make for a perfect look. Have you ever bought a white silk saree? If you haven’t, we hope you do after seeing this.
7. The Floral Saree

Keerthy’s nailed it in this floral saree with all the retro elements like the sunglasses and long braids. The long bindi and the floral handbag give the look a completely retro makeover. Floral sarees were a rage back in the 1960s, and even to this day, many women make it a point to add one of these to their collection.
It’s amazing how in a world where most of the leading actresses tie up with international brands, we have women like Keerthy who are promoting the traditional Indian wear. While I just cannot pick my favorite saree from her collection, I would love to know which one is yours. Let us know in the comments section below.
